Too many meetings, and our boss is one yapper

I thought I was the only one frustrated with meetings until my colleagues also mentioned they were not able to get work done because most of the day was spent on meetings

Plus our boss (CEO) loves talking, anyway the meetings are agenda-less. He stretches 30 min calls to 2 hours and then has the audacity to question the productivity.

Cannot tell me this, he gets very touchy when feedback is negative for him. And then writes sarcastic messages. Also, who wants to take up fights with person who pays your salary

What to do in this case? I'm tired of working 12 hours each day

  1. Try sending invites with an agenda
  2. Drop off the call and leave a message that you gotta attend another meeting or you're working on something that's a priority or any personal reasons
  3. After every meeting send an MOM
  4. Do everything for you to escape any meaningless meetings except telling your boss. That's the safest option.

If there's one thing that TCS taught me...it is to PRETEND like every manager is nice and always right. If not you'll definitely lose your mind.

Tried some of these, he will follow up on what work was more important than him. He will ask for the work, find faults and make me re-do everything, just because he can

Also, he talks and discusses imp things at same time. So 1% is important stuff and 99% is shit. You never know when the 1% will come, so have to attentive all the time

I feel you bro. Better when he asks about productivity...tell him there is too much work and maybe he needs to hire resources.

Why don't you set meetings right after meetings with him, or plant fake meetings? And just say "Boss I will shift that one by 10 mins" but beyond that should feel like a crime

This way he will love you for being busy but also for respecting him

Haha that’s actually a nice practical idea

Indian executives are the worst. Doesn't matter whether they are in India or other countries. No sense of time. Extreme micromanagement because they cannot imagine any scenario where people want to work willingly under them. The entire hsr layout is peppered by wannabe losers who managed to raise a little money and now think they own the employees.

That's just strange... That's not the right manager. I feel like if I had such a fundamental flaw with someone I worked for, it would be impossible for me to do it for a long time

Change your manager or role or job?

JumpyPenguin

Would you really change your job because your manager talks a lot 🤔

@AlphaGrindset He is the CEO, all roles are doomed. Would probably change the job, however work is good challenging enough

Are you required to turn on your cameras? If not, then I'd recommend just working while the meeting goes on. From what you've mentioned, it doesn't seem like it's an interactive meeting so I assume you don't need to give in your inputs.
If it becomes a lecture instead of a meeting, might as well give a proxy ;)

That is the thing, all calls with boss have to be camera on. Other ones can be off camera too.

The moment you understand that the manager doesn't pay your salary, your attitude changes for good.

He is CEO, he pays my salary. Quite literally

1.Try limiting your meetings with limited agenda 2.Any distracted talks should be pointed out diplomatically, bringing the attention back to agenda points. 3. If waste talks make you work overtime , avoid your involvement in it saying bluntly to ur boss that you have to finish work early so that you can leave office in time.

And finally keep in mind irrespective what you do, you can not please everyone ;) so focus on ur life priorities.

Wow that’s quite a pickle you have yourself in. A lot of good ideas here. So I thought of a stretched idea. How about transcribing your meetings and then using AI summarise those transcripts? Maybe that helps in some way?

We have his AI notetaker in all calls 🫣

I was faced with a similar situation when I joined the team we had 2 hours stand up twice a day. I went ahead and sent him a lot of agile concepts and offered a practical solution to provide updates in metrical way and connect for any other queries. He talks too much as well but I interrupt him saying that’s great and I think that’s unrelated, let’s come back to the topic and I generally end the call by saying I’ll reach out if I need anything. I am good for now. Hopefully that reduced from 4 hours a day to 30 mins.

I hate working on someone else's schedule

With so many zoom meetings where someone just wants to toot their own horn to monotonous town halls, how the hell am I supposed to get any actual work done? So much talk about doing the work but no actual time to do it!
