What happened to the future that has become the present?

We used to have so many cool concept designs for products, many of them were actually useful, many seemed within the reach of possibility and many even made it to prototypes to be showcased at tech conventions. What has become of them since? Where have these exciting things ended up? Worse part is no one even thinks of cool stuff anymore, a decade ago you could see all these cool renders of "technologically advanced" gadgets online but that seems like a forgotten art these days.

The economy is tightening companies are going lean and because of this AI is being used to replace people rather than as a tool of innovation and growth. Not only ai, any tech out there is seen from a lens of "does this help me cut cost and save money" rather than"let's build something amazing ". This is a trend that i have largely observed and i am hoping goes away in upcoming days
