Years of Experience is killing me

RANT ALERT

I am a Software Engineer with 2 YoE. Wherever I apply they ask for 3+ or 5+ YoE minimum. I am hardly eligible for any roles. To one recruiter I really got angry and said "What is it that you believe 3+YoE candidates can do and 2+ can't ?" I got the same old reply - "It is company's policy" . I wonder who makes them. There are some really stupid people above us.

Seriously - how does an EM decide that this position requires at least 10 YoE. I bet they haven't the slightest clue and possibly tossing a coin. Or worst, they think what they were capable of doing at 10+ YoE themselves.

My first question is why do you want to change now ?

Secondly, please check the no of years of experience before applying.

Thirdly, if you want to ignore and still apply for the roles go ahead but don’t be disappointed if they reject you mate.

Because if you wait for another 6 months or so, probably they will consider you. So have patience. 6 months mai kuch khaas nahi ho jayega isa if you want to get into a specific company. Utilize the time to upskill yourself.

Yeah this is nonsense. In my company i applied for internal transfer to a higher role (SE-2) from SE-1 and they are saying it is not allowed. Bloody idiots i am already doing se-2 work in my current role and they are not promoting because of budget

Old Tech stack. Less growth, less hike. EMs not that knowledgeable in Software Engineering. IMO, only good for senior folks who is taking life slowly and wants to focus on family. Very stable in that sense.

I have gone through this, switched jobs at 2 yoe to faang which required 4+, showed worked on serious projects during clg as well.

Also, what 3+ guys have is higher salary. So if your current base can match that with switch hike they will allow.

I have seen folks with 4+ yoe taking 10+yoe jobs bcoz they had super high base from a startup

You will need to prove that what people take 3 years to learn - you have already learnt in 2 years.

Show the proof to them somehow. Perhaps do open source, build a profile on Twitter/Linkedin/Github/Stack Overflow.
If you are going via the traditional route, you will get traditional results.

And the folks who made the rules perhaps understood that most folks are not exceptional. They made the rules for common folks. They understood that it usually takes 3 years of experience to do a particular work for which they are hiring. They don’t want to give 1 extra year of salary to someone who won’t be able to deliver as expected.

Also, you can surely join small startups who are just starting. They only care about how well you can do job.
Years of Experience is just a proxy for skills developed. It works for 80% of the cases but of-course not the only metric. Google all the latest startups which recently raised seed funding. Checkout YC startups of India. They might be more open. You might need to take paycut but will be worth it.

Funny story: some unicorn startup told me, we can’t interview you for next level role because you are 2 months short(at the start of interview). I said I will apply again after 2 months then and cut the call.
