20% less salary for 20% better manager is a trade off you should make

Hear me out, this is a formula that has always helped me.

When choosing between two different offers, here is what I would ALWAYS do

  1. 20% less salary 20% better manager, choose company with better manager
  2. 20% less salary 20% better culture, choose company with better culture
  3. 20% less salary 20% better brand, choose company with better brand
  4. 20% less salary 20% better city, choose company in the better city

Twice I have chosen an offer with lower salary, prioritizing a better life/learning.

Only to eventually earn a very good salary any way. Better than many of my peers (I am not boasting)

Be wise and choose a better life. Not a better salary. The money will follow in the long term

Assumptions: Both salaries are sufficient to satisfy all your basic needs

Issued in public interest. Comment if you disagree. I may or may not reply

Does HR mentions that we are giving you 20% less salary but you will get 20% btter manager? If manager is 20% worse than does employee get 20% extra money? The concept is good but you won't know unless you join and spend sometime in the company ...

20% salary you can verify on paper, you can't verify if the manager is gonna turn out to be good.

  • Ask current employees
  • Sometimes you meet your manager to be during interviews as well
  • Judge other employees you meet during the interview

Agreed, it’s not easy. But when you are interviewing, you should be judging the company and its people, just as much as they are judging you for the role.

Agree with all of them Less salary better city is the toughest to pick, because better city definition is very flexible once you see better salary you jump to it

True true - better city doesn't always have to be more expensive tho
