From stable paycheck to freelance life: How do you deal with the uncertainties that come with this?

I have 8 years of software development experience and earning a decent salary, but contemplating to slowly transition towards self employment. My skills are mostly in backend engineering- building web APIs and distributed cloud services. Are there opportunities available for such a skillset? I have observed it’s easier for frontend engineers and UI/UX designers to get freelancing opportunities as compared to backend engineers. Anyone on this forum with similar skillset has been successful in getting good quality freelance work and make good money? Can you share your journey?

Hey folks, wanted to understand a couple of things from experienced folks here - 1. What does freelance consulting look like? 2. How to start working in freelance consulting(shadowing/independent projects for free/volunteering etc.)? 3. Are there any hard barriers to entry(YoE, MBA, T1 grad for example)? 4. What platforms should one use to obtain projects that pay decently well - 2-3 hours daily leading to ~30k earnings monthly? If this is an unrealistic expectation, how does the payscale build over time? 5. Any other insights/comments that would affect the decision to work on freelance consulting. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone , I want to know if there are any freelancers out there or have knowledge of it ? I want to start freelancing and made an account on fiverr and upwork but I don’t know to start initially. Also, would leaving the job in the long run be fruitful for the sake feelancing as I see a lot of people make a lot more than corporate job. And last but not the least , I see a lot of people struggling to get money out of clients.

I'm a marketing professional with 6+ years of work exp (4 yrs full-time + 2.5 yrs freelance). Finding it difficult to transition back to full-time as companies only keep considering my previous CTC based on my full-time role, though I was earning much higher through freelancing. How do I negotiate to be compensated fairly based on how much I was earning as a freelancer? Any strategies/tips are welcome :)

I have reached this number after working for over 11 years I know disciplined investing/saving works wonders.

So, I have heard multiple people that 20s is about exploring. Explore different jobs, work style, people etc , you name it! I believe with that, you cannot think of earning as exploration into different roles results in being at the same level across roles. 1. What would you do or are currently doing about this? 2. Do you agree that 20s is about exploring? 3. Did you explore in your 20s or did you try to climb the corporate ladder? 4. Would you do things differently if you had the chance?

As Software Engineers, it might be bit difficult starting out with first freelance gig or contract job. I was able to secure one in college with about 50k/month for about 4months working as a back end engineer for an Indian SaaS company and international client. Great learning and great pay for a newbie. Also if you have a full time job and freelance gig. how do you juggle between both? Keeping in mind you also need to take personal time and time for fitness.

Any thoughts on career transition from full time at big companies to freelancer? I have 5.7 years of exp of FSE. and would like to settle as freelancer in near future. I want to experiment this option for 1 year and if not succeeded is it okay to switch back to full time emp? Is it worth taking the risk considering my financial status? I see these are pros and cons Pros: Complete wfh. Direct contact with clients no boss/manager Cons: Income will be effected if no project. Continuous search for projects. Risky. Any other pros and cons one can think of pls mention in the comments. I would definitely try this option for atleast one year.

I have been a passionate writer since 2019 and have always wanted to work for my own, but starting a freelancing career after i quit my job is quite overwhelming, i hardly know how to find the right clients that I can work with, the rates i can set, the work boundaries, everything feels so out of place. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this?
