How to switch career from PSU job to SDE

Background: Tier 1 college, Branch - Civil, 2018 passout, Presently working at a state govt PSU with around 11.5 LPA CTC (salary part only, excluding medical facility which is decent) Things I like at the present job: 1. Home state posting all throughout the career 2. Easy to take leaves and can mostly go home on weekends 3. Good work life balance. Things I don't like: 1. Rural posting (as of now, will change in future) 2. Repetitive kind of work - not challenging enough and hence limited growth (I guess this is true for most PSU jobs) Why thinking of the switch? 1. Civil was never really my passion - just what I got. 2. Taking the job was mostly due to family pressure of doing govt job. 3. Liked programming during school days, did web dev work in college fests. 4. I do like the process of building something up and also learning new things, and am hence beginning to feel tech is something that would suit me. 5. Salary and fomo factors are there but not significant enough. I feel I have not been taking enough risks and hence am not being rewarded enough. I want the thrill of grinding and progressing in life. What's stopping me then? 1. Obviously, the safety and protection of a secured job is difficult to overcome. 2. Family wants me to settle now, but I don't. 3. Recessions like this where layoffs take place even for skilled people due to factors not in one's control. 4. The fact that I might have to take a paycut, to begin in this career. So what should be the path to take? 1. Learn DSA, make projects and apply. Could use my network (although very very few of my batch are in tech, most are in analytics, finance, core sector) to begin somewhere and switch 2. Go for M.Tech in tier 1, and hence aim for product based companies. I am more inclined towards option 2, as the tech job market being what it is now. I am ready to slog for 2 -3 years (mtech preparation, mtech and then placement) Please help me out with your views and suggestion.

For God sakes be comfortable with the pain or cons of being a sde. If you are comfy, then sure Go ahead.

I'd suggest trying your hand at freelancing first rather than diving head first. try to learn a technology of your choice, deliver some real life projects, if you like the experience, start applying for jobs.

Thanks for your suggestion. I dont think freelancing opportunities are that easy to obtain for a newbie developer, with no industry experience? But definitely will give that a go to test the waters.

it field is going to be very competitive. So it's going to be another race like IIT JEE. Hence before quitting ur job, test the waters first

Stick to PSU only imo... Nothing beats hometown and govt job security.. You can go to urban area for travel and few weeks

But in govt job, you are restricted, don't have flexibility of choice in your life, like postings, transfers, type of work assigned. But in corporate world your destiny is in your hands. If you got skills, you can go as you wish.

Need Guidance for getting SDE role after 2 yrs gap

Hi , can folks here guide steps /suggest how to get SDE role at entry role . I regret giving 2 yrs a career for the civil services exam. I graduated with BTech in 2021 . If I had only sat for college placements at my Tier 1 college, I wouldn't have been living with regrets. I have been doing projects in the MERN stack . I also have skills like Postgresql, Trpc and am familiar with using ORMs and type validators like Zod . Since I had no previous experience at internship or full time , no companies are shortlisting my profile .

I am a software engineer with 2+years of experience at a product based company. My current CTC is around 10 lpa which I feel is below market standards. Also my wlb is terrible and growth at my current organisation has become stagnant. I mostly work on bug fixes and some minor feature enhancements. What are the skills that are required to switch to a product based company as soon as possible with at least 15-17 lpa ? Currently I am not aiming for big tech ( FAANG) type companies as I know these will require thorough DSA , System design preparations which is not possible with my current job.

Need genuine advice on switching

Context: almost 5 YOE, BTech + MBA both from tier 3. Current CTC 32LPA including variable and retention bonus (24.3 is fixed). I work as an APM in a pharma consulting organisation (which also has a SaaS platform) in Pune. Recently Got an offer from a tier 1 consulting company (not MBB but close enough) for a pretty new role of product + project management for one of their saas tools. The offer is 20% hike on my fixed + variable upto 15% + 2L JB. And it’s in Mumbai which is my hometown. I tried negotiating but the hiring manager said this is the best offer they can give. The job role will require infrequent travel to client locations and overall seems interesting. I’m in a dilemma if I should accept or not because the brand is infinitely better than my current organisation and will open up exit opportunities to MBB. On the other hand my professional growth in current organisation seems stagnant as there is not a lot to learn here but monetary growth has been good. (10-15% hikes every year).

Need guidance on switching

I did my graduation in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi Technological University. Worked my ass off during covid lockdown to grab a Software developer job. Number of hours spent on DSA and development for straight 3 years. I was able to grab a decent package being from mechanical background. Currently i am working in Accenture as a software developer -> Java full stack developer + Angular (12LPA ctc, 9 Base) I want to work in a product based company which has better opportunities for me because i feel there is very limited opportunities in accenture and somehow people do not encourage to go for them at all. I need guidance on which companies should i be looking for great opportunities, great tech stack, with good management. Salary is never a obstacle for me. I am just looking for growth at this point of time in my career. Currently i am back to DSA again for interview preps. Referrals are also well appreciated.

Placement dilemma, recession,job cuts , suggestions ??

Am currently in a circuital branch of a nit (graduating in 2025) preparing for tech jobs , not one of those brilliant minds , okayish on leetcode trying to cover major dsa topics and important questions. But everyday I keep hearing about layoffs, AI, recession, cost cutting etc Should I do something different, should I keep preparing for tech jobs or I should shift to core jobs or GATE, really confused !!

Hey you all, I am a 3YoE backend dev in a Python tech stack (majorly FastAPI, Flask and a bit of Django) with databases like (MySQL, PostgresSQL, AWS RDS and MongoDB) and Cloud services(AWS and Azure DevOps) alongside Orchestration tools (Airflow).
