Hereās mine, Care deeply about any work that you touch, give your best and more. The effort really shows, especially when you can solve something better than what they hoped for.
Contradictory to your lessonā¦ I learned not to get too attached to your code. Bcoz it might just get scraped.
Avoid office politics and gossiping the most. Imo it doesn't really help and nobody is a friend in the office. Stay away from all this shit, maintain a good solid image of your work and professional integrity. Rest is moh maya ;)
Donāt give free suggestions unless they ask.

Mine is to stay detached from the projects I work on at work. And always keep working on some personal project and allow myself to stay attached to these projects instead of the projects at work.
This gives me a fine balance to handle work and grow.

As engineers, we feel our work will speak but thatās not the reality because people donāt have time for details. Effective communication will make you not only a better employee but help you grow as a leader.
P.S. - Thereās definitely a fine line in communication and wasting time of others.

Whatever maybe the case, donāt burn bridges with anyone in office(even be it someone whom you hate to the core). Itās a small world and a long career(4 decades). You never know whom you bump into in the future.
Better stay on neutral ground than being on the enemy side.
Will save you a lot of trouble and open to lot of options. This is called being diplomatic in corporate.

My learning- Be detached. The company will survive without you. Stop being there for work "emergencies" at 11 pm. It can wait.

Don't bring any kind of feelings to work. Gossips/being angry/favouring someone etc is just complicating your life.
You're only lending your time in return for money. Care only about what will help you make more money or what will help you learn which will help you make more money.

15 years and my learnings - 1. Treat everyone as your potential customer and understand their requirement and accordingly sell your skills, attitude, work as a product. Get to the level of selling comb to a bald person. 2. "Networking " is important. Talking with colleagues, managers and customers is of paramount importance. You never know who's gonna be your sponsor in career. 3. Networking can happen anywhere and everywhere there is no specific place as sutta points or lunch points. But it's more easy there. 4. Be assertive and speak your mind, this is especially true for Global specifically US MNCs, they don't like diffident people. Put forth your ideas, as they say the "the most squeakier gear gets the oil" . 5. No work is bad work, get your hands dirty and also pick up dirty works which no one usually does, this would create dependency on you as those jobs no one wud do once you leave, you can leverage it later. 6. Information is useful. Gather as much as you can and keep it close to heart and trade it when you see profit. Last but not the least. Corporates are not places for passion and emotion, they are places to navigate the politics and win it eventually

If you want to command respect, your response and tune should be the same if it is your junior or manager
Go out and meet/speak with customers and potential customers, not for sales.
It leads to the some really great insights always about what they want and hence how product needs to evolve
I didnāt learn it this week, it just got reinforced as I went on a field visit :)

Work on your interpersonal and communication skills, youād be surprised how quickly you get noticed (in a good way) when you know how to put down you ideas/points intelligibly.
If you are a fresher, just put out those ideas, whatever they are.
And as far your hike is concerned, if you think you deserve more then ask, demand for it. If you dont ask for it, nothingās going to change. (Especially if you are a woman)
Same goes for work. If you want something, ask. No harm in asking :)

That talk about the hike part is so true. I received a hike which was much less than what I was expecting tho truthfully it was more than what the median hike was. Sort of fell into depression due to that and didn't talk about it with anyone. I finally switched and the new company could only offer a fixed percentage over my then CTC rather than the CTC I asked. Had I discussed getting more hike with my manager, maybe they could have given and while switching i could have gotten the CTC I wanted. But then again, the major source of motivation to shift came only because of the hike they gave so i guess it worked out all well in the end.

Be extremely transactional in your workspace. With your work, colleagues, cross functional teams, etc. Dont do favours for a friend and then expect them to pay you back similarly. Horse trading is the name of the game and you need to learn how to play it asap. Have a business usecase for every ask with clear costs and impact.
When I was young words like passion, learning, valued work were the KWs to motivate folks. Slowly as you rise through the ranks you realise the exploitation that occurs of people who follow this creed. They have a cause that drives all decision making and others manipulate this to their benefit.
Someone who is just starting - Be vocal always and donāt afraid to put crazy ideas or ask stupid questions
Someone who is experienced - Always try to add value in your conversations and be bold with your asks from the stakeholders

Don't have any expectations from your company. You are valued only till you are productive no matter how much effort you have put for past years.
I was on notice period and was on bench for last 3 weeks left and HR called me and asked to take early release as I am of "NO USE" to the company..these were her exact words.
