Should I Ask my manager
Hey all, I have 10 years of experience and currently I am a senior software engineer in 100 years bank. In the mid year I had a good rating. Before year end i would like to request for a promotion to a Team Lead. What should be the approach to request/ask the manager? Please guide me
Just ask, don't be reticent.
Frame it as a Career path conversation. Put your ambition out there. Understand what the requirements are in their mind for a TL, and validate if you have those competencies.
The end result of this conversation usually sounds like:
Sneha, to be a TL you need to demonstrate A B C D & E. As part of your current role we see you have proven you are good at A B C over a period of time. For D & E lets put you through a training / orientation or/and give you an interim assignment to lead the team to check for these or/and get you through an assessment or/and other things your org does
The result may not be an immediate promotion, but you know your on the right track with a defined time frame.
MNCs will have these competencies and requirements well documented. Ask for them from your HRBP.

How to start the discussion? Should I show case what I have done all over the year in a PPT and then bring up the promotion point
Human Resources Business Partner - your assigned HR person.
You can make the ppt, helps frame where you are at.
Most promotion conversations would also bring up the point of "managing other humans". Since you don't have a proof point the usual way is to make you an interim lead of something to check if you have the competence and temperament for that.

It's not always leaving the place. For my understanding at some point we should start asking for the work we have done. Always good to try. If I miss something in my career as per my manager will try to add.

MNCs are more on communication. Put it across as you are hoping for promotion and you would like to know if there are any expected skills and tasks you can do ao that your manager can help your case.
First, check the competency requirement of the next level and try to rate yourself along those parameters.
Make a short document with the list of projects (with impact) that you have executed in your tenure in the current organisation. Add, how you have aced those competencies across these projects.
Set up the meeting with the manager, upfront have the conversation that as per competency requirement you are ready for the next level and discuss that short document that you have prepared. Try to have an objective discussion with them and ask for specific pointers if they feel otherwise.
