SILENT LAYOFF

I recently read an article about the growing skills gap in the tech industry. Apparently, universities just can't keep up with the lightning-fast changes in the field. It got me wondering - how do you all stay relevant in your careers? Especially with AI taking over jobs. Are there certain skills or certifications you think are essential for staying competitive?

I'm currently in the Junior year of my college and I've received an internship offer as a SDE from one of the respected companies(hasn't laid off anyone yet). Since 2024 is the year I graduate, I was wondering what the scenario might be according to the people senior to me. Will we be a victim to the situation as well! The terror is for real :/

I noticed a trend on LinkedIn that people use the layoffs as an excuse to preach others that if you constantly upskill and learn then you will be safe from layoffs. To any freshers who believe in this crap listen this - The folks who got laid off from companies are not in any way underskilled. I've seen my colleagues get laid off at my previous company who were extremely talented and responsible for building products from scratch. These companies layoff people randomly and not skill based. They choose the people who are drawing more salary (often the most skilled) and fire them in the name of cost cutting. So, how does upskilling will help this situation? Note that, the current tech market is unstable and will continue to be for next few years. Upskilling may get you up the corporate ladder but it won't in anyway save you from impending layoffs. The so-called influencers preaching this should STOP. NOTICE this post, how this guy conveniently skipped mentioning Google layoffs in the list, since he currently works ar Google 😆

Yes there are abstract answers but can someone please clarify how to and what to do, also layoff fear is all around us. Please drop your valuable advice. Thanks in advance.

I’ve been noticing a trend lately and wanted to see if anyone else feels the same. After about 10 years in the tech industry, it seems like a lot of us are shifting towards people or product management roles instead of continuing deep technical work. I get that management roles often come with perks, but it feels like we’re losing out on technical growth. With how fast the tech space is changing and AI taking over a lot of things, it feels even more crucial to stay updated technically. Is anyone else struggling with this? Is it any different in startups versus big tech companies? How are you dealing with it? Are there ways to stay technically sharp while still advancing your career? Any decision making framework/parameter to evaluate career growth?

Some are reluctant to move from the position they are in, some are searching for a good one... Some are missing out on opportunities, while the other are booming... In this current era of upskilling... We still are thinking can I do AI or I cannot.. Let's support, motivate one another and encourage to upskill and move up... Am currently in a circuital branch of a nit (graduating in 2025) preparing for tech jobs , not one of those brilliant minds , okayish on leetcode trying to cover major dsa topics and important questions. But everyday I keep hearing about layoffs, AI, recession, cost cutting etc Should I do something different, should I keep preparing for tech jobs or I should shift to core jobs or GATE, really confused !!
