[Amazon] Resign without offer in recession
Currently working as SDE-2 at Amazon, promoted some 1 year back. I'm totally burned out from work pressure, oncalls, layoff and performance review cycles every 3 months. Thinking of resigning without any offer by June/July. Will this be the right decision in today's market. I'll take some 2-3 months rest and start job hunting again, hopefully in better wlb companies. Just want to enjoy, travel to new places and prioritise my health. Balding and weight gain are major issues, and i don't think conditions will be improving in Amazon soon. BUT, the job market is tough, and IDK how it will impact my career Is this the right decision or I'm a fool Total experience: 3.5 Yrs Age : 27

I feel why not just stick there and let it pass through. Burnout is a part of it. Try to meet up with friends often and join the gym.
From what i understand, he doesn't have much free time so i doubt he can go to a gym. If he's contemplating resigning even in this recession then I think it's also a good assumption that he had been trying to get through this for quite some time now and is unable to anymore

I understand but i genuinely don't believe anyone is so busy that they can't even take out 1 hour to go to a nearby gym. I'm sorry but it's true.

If you have the financial cushion for 6 months and you feel anxiety won't eat you up after putting down papers, then go for it.
I won't give a blanket advice, from end that YOLO or Hustle cuz everyone's circumstances and mental strength is different . Someone who wants to be a CXO vs a freelancer with high paying clients but nomadic life will make decisions differently
But if you can endure the slight anxiety that comes with it + have enough cover then take a break but have an accountability in place. Its easy to lose track of time and goals.

1 year easily. Bro hit the resignation button already. Just ensure you internally do a 3-6 month arena for getting back. Also it never gets better. :(

In a similar situation, only thing I am worrying about is lowballing might happen once we come back after break, thousands of applicants for a single opening right now.
I would suggest you to quit your job.. your peace Is more important than anything
See if you are able to change teams. Don't quote work pressure as the reason of course.

I know you are in a golden handcuffs situation but things outside amazon aren’t too bad. At the same time, I know few teams in amazon are too toxic. I don’t think for SDEs market will be too punishing, to be honest amazon recruiters started pitching/LinkedIn messages again for SDE roles.
If you feel you have some backups, take some rest. For sure, at 27 you might not feel the impact on body but 3-4 years down the line all cruelties on the body will start haunting you back (especially when you’re not able to do anything ).

I am contemplating the same. If you have enough savings with not a lot of responsibilities and debts. Have a plan in place then please go ahead and do it. I feel mental peace and wellness should be a priority.
If no debt, enough savings and no pressure then just do it. I am guessing if you’re placed in Amazon then you’re smart enough to join any other company whenever you have the chance. Enjoy life now than wait for FIRE

same. i get paid okay, but just burnt out. i have only 1 year of experience so i think i will get used to it and perhaps everyone feels the same in their first company.
i even thought if they lay me off, it would be good.
around 30% of the company has been laid off and working till 10pm is normal.
I am also thinking if they lay me off it’s okay. I don’t have much work pressure but I just don’t like it
@MrPeanutButter could you wait until you get something be it remote or full time or freelance?
In case the burnout is very heavy on you (chances of clinical depression or panic attacks recurring frequently) then by all means seek help and take a break. It is mich harder to recover from that than the job market.

In the times of layoff, you are expecting that they will give sabbatical leave!!
Can’t you take a long vacation leave?
I’d suggest using all your leaves before resigning to get the extra few days
Chances are that, if he asks for long leave, he will be laid off.
I will be out into focus plan, and eventually be terminated via PIP.
Once u start taking leaves they u will be in limelight of next URA target. Which happens
Resign, take a break. Your health (mental+physical), is much more important than Job. Job will easily come again, may be not of this high package, but surly some Job.
If this kind of a thought even hit your mind, then you definitely need it. If you've earned enough to sustain for a good few months, then suggestion would be you go ahead quitting
