[Thread] Have you ever witness someone get unfairly promoted? What was the reason?
Heard a friend talk about something like this happen to them over another colleague who is cozy with the management.
Happens all the time. Management is a power position at most places. They need to keep their key folks (read as pets sometimes) close and happy to maintain their power.
@AITookMyJob did this happen to you?
I’m asking because it’s counterintuitive to not promote someone who is excellent at what they do. Companies who don’t start to decay rather fast.
A Players keep A players around.
Yes, it did happen to me. I quit.
Makes sense for A players to keep A players around. However, when a company has grown to a big enough size, there's a general tendency to lose focus on retaining *all* A players.
Politics tends to increase so losing some A-list ICs becomes collateral damage to retain A-list or B-list managers.

Had a colleague who was going to put down her papers because of a better offer. The EM told her if you stay you'll get a promotion. She left anyhow and told all of this to me. Mind you that the number of promotions are fixed every year in this firm.
Even she was like there are folks who deserve the promotion more than me but just to retain me, the EM is ready to throw away their chances.
Is this normal?
What is the hike one get in your organisation if they get promoted? I am sure she was getting way better hike outside and hence left. No one is this emotional and sympathetic in corporate. Money is more important than promotion

It even depends on the type of manager you have.
My manager was chill but a straight rule following guy so he promoted 2 out of 6 people as policy.
The other teams manager was aggressive and promoted 4/6 people citing great performance even though it was absolutely the same with our team and some other product teams.
So sometimes you even get fucked for following standard protocol. The whole corporate mobility up and sideways is highly luck dependent as with all things in life

People do not get promoted for thier skill set. They get promoted based on the trust the manager has on his subordinate. Higher that trust quicker is the promotion.
