How do you hold a conversation (text or in person)?

Raita: I went to Mumbai. Biryani: Oh nice, how was it? What places did you visit? Did you try the vada pav there? Papad: I love mountains. Biryani: Oh! What places have you been to? Do you like paragliding or just enjoy mountains from a safe distance 😋 Elaichi: I was at… Biryani: GTFO

Curiosity. Be curious and be a good listener. Show that you ACTUALLY care about what the person is saying rather than just pretending to hear it. If you can do this, half of the job is done from your end. And if the other person is curious as well, the rest of the conversation just flows, and you won’t even realize. :) Never pretend or fake just to have a conversation. Because chances are you yourself will not enjoy it, forget about the awkwardness which it creates. Curiosity is something that comes from within, so I can understand not everyone can do this, but it’s always worth giving a try because you never know. :)

Start talking on the point that the other person ends. Ask a question when the conversation starts to fade or after 2 such points. your talking point must invoke a memory or passion of the other person. randomly inject a personal story in relation to something that the other person says. That personal story can be random or even tangential you your main point of conversation. Your conversation will never be stopped by the opposite party. Even if it fades that person will step in ad ask a question and continue the conversation as long as it invokes their memory or passion Main rule, "never correct the person or give an opinion" If the person is of opposite sex - one more rule -"never disagree".

You shouldn't do what you stated in example. If someone says i went to Mumbai and if you want to engage them you should takk about "their" experience not immediately draw the conversation on yourself, reeks of self centred personality. Same for mountain example. Correct answer, i.e. only if you want to engage them should be which mountains you been to? Do u hike? Etc etc Those are perfectly good replies if you dont care.
