After 27 years of an alcohol soaked lifestyle, I quit. Ask my anything!

Sober for 2 years, and my lifestyle hasn't been compromised one bit. I still go to bars with my friends, I even make cocktails for them when they come home. My family drinks, and I just have some random non alcoholic drink to say cheers with. I have no urges for alcohol whatsoever.

Best decision I've ever made.

why do people consume alcohol even if they know its extremely unhealthy. Is it that addictive?

DancingUnicorn
DancingUnicorn

In a social drinking setting, it loosens up the folks a bit of some inhibitions and help socially bond and relax better. 1 or 2 around long conversation is a sweet spot.

But then folks overdo the drinking part and go full unhinged dancing and stuff - is used as the only coping/stress release mechanism. Keep doing it week after week, month after month with the same set of problems, but feelings/emotions get reset. And years later, one day, it hits - that there are also other ways to....

I quit because the later case scenario dawned on me much sooner, and cant do more of this pretend happy and enjoying stuff. Key is having an identity & hobbies outside work and socially designated life responsibilities.

That being said - everyone has diff things going at them at different stages of life. Let them be and still hangout and stuff. Just ensure you adhere to your own decision and show the conviction behind your decision to others to the point where they can't push you to break.

What kind of non alcoholic drink do you’ve?

GroovyPenguin
GroovyPenguin

Heineken and budweiser both have decent 0 alcohol beers. If not I'd just have a glass of juice or even ☕

@RoloTomassi I had a lot of trouble quitting. Kept relapsing. So I started disulphiram.
Best decision ever.

Sorry to hear that. Would you believe it if I told you I used a book? And I quit cold turkey immediately after, knowing I was done with alcohol?

CosmicRaccoon

Alcohol has caused me enough strife for a lifetime. If the mentioned book can provide me additional help in quitting alcohol, I would definitely love to read it.

What's your favourite drink ( alcoholic )

GroovyPenguin
GroovyPenguin

I liked them all, but rum and coke was my weakness. It's an infinite alcohol - sugar - caffeine loop.

What age did you quit at? Do you think you should have quit earlier (or never had alcohol to begin with)

GroovyPenguin
GroovyPenguin

Good question. I quit at 41. Definitely should have quit earlier. I feel like I've been playing a piano with one arm tied behind my back. I have so much more time now. I think clearer.

Should I have never had alcohol? Probably. Although I don't know if that would have given space to a more dangerous vice when I was younger.

Im in my early 20s, just started drinking coz of peer pressure and social drinking scenarios. This post worries me tbh

GroovyPenguin
GroovyPenguin

Yeah not worth it. No better time than now to stand your ground and tell your peers - this is who I am, this is what I want, and I'm not going to drink just because other people are doing it. Forget the alcohol and all it's associated problems, imagine what this does for your self confidence and sense of identity.

Don't man don't. Your peers will respect you more of you don't drink. They will show the opposite but inside they will respect you. And for the sake of your future self don't drink. Apart from that you'll save a shit ton of money.

How much did you saved from not having alcohol?

And, was it restricted to light alcoholic drinks or heavy such as whiskey and others?

GroovyPenguin
GroovyPenguin

Probably around 20-25k a month. In terms of time, I have 3-4 extra hours of clear-headed productivity everyday. Can't put a price on that 😅

Mostly hard liquor - rum, whisky, bourbon. Occasional beers if it's during the day.

25k is a lot.
