Being a picky GenZ consumer

Saw a similar post somewhere from an European and I think it’s pretty valid for India. For context, I am in my early 30s, a home owner, living in tier-2 city with a pretty high salary. Recently got married and my wife also works as an Enterprise AE for a listed US company. Our cost of living is pretty low given the house and tier-2 city. Even if we had a kid, the overall cost of living will not change a lot. I got to where I am, economically, by a combination of hard work and luck. Luck definitely was a huge part of it. Knowing the right people at the right time, working on the right technologies helped a lot more in advancing my career a lot more than grinding for good grades. Even the ability to buy a house without much debt, was partly because I was lucky to sell my shares in a fairly small startup. It would be easy to say things aren’t economically bad based on my own experience or that of my close friends. However, when I look at things more objectively, I can’t help but come to the conclusion that we are screwed as a generation. Except for maybe the top 1%, salaries are not keeping up even with inflation. Housing costs, specially in tier 1/2 cities are unbelievably high even if you want an average apartment. Jobs are no where to be seen. The whole generation is living in the hope of the stock market rally never ending. This seems completely unsustainable as a nation. I might be doing well for now, but I still recognise how these are real problems for most Indians, who’ve been waiting for India’s century for 20 years Given that the services industry contributes more than 50% to the GDP, the current state of joblessness, the overall sluggishness in IT and related sectors, and the fundamental changes happening to the way IT services now work, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a complete recession in the next 4-5 years. Lately, there has been a lot of criticism of anyone expressing anger on how bad things are but I think it’s helpful to talk about this.

So I ran these 2 surveys on GV. The one on the left is for millennials and the other one is for GenZ. I really thought that the GenZ narrative was false. Guess I was wrong. This is such a stark difference. What do you think is the reason for this? P.S. I was born in 2000

How are companies and startups doing marketing for Gen Z? Does anybody have any idea about this?

I'll be happy to answer any questions about GenZ! GenZ are the most diverse generation (accelerated by growing up with the internet since we were 4 years old) and you cannot generalise by saying 'this is genz' because no matter what, not even 30% of us are similar. Yes, we run after validation on Instagram. And yes it's unhealthy. But it's not fair to single us out. Older generations have also been obsessed with TV News, FB and Twitter. No need to deny, we all know. GenZ also more openly talks about mental health and we call out things which the older generations just accepted as 'aisa hi hota hai'. Think Gender Inclusivity, Harmful Climate Practices, Running after only Salary, Marriage and Kids, Jobs where you're not treated with Basic Human Dignity, Shitty Mental Health, etc. We're conscious about prioritising our mental health, even though it's tougher for us than ever before, so we're sorry if our calling things 'toxic' annoys you a little. We're all extremely concerned about Climate Change because we know we're the last generation which can fix this.

What is it that you like and dislike about them in general?

I was suffering from 2-3 mild health issues in metro. (prolonged cold n cough, regular sneezing etc) Came home 🏡 in diwali and now extended wfh due to health gain. Living with parents and consuming clean air + food is helping improve my sleep quality as well ❤️‍🩹 (2h+ deep sleep) 8h continuous sleep. I did cost benifit analysis and have decided to work on a plan which will eventually help me settle down at my birthplace within 2-5y. synopsis -- Children's play under sun 🌞 and have group of 10 kids. They ain't worried about anything. Their happiness index > ceos. They don't know about masturbation till 10th or age 14 if they don't have a smartphone. My workplace is open and aqi is below 10. Strong peepal and banyan trees 🌴 even 100y old. When I feel stressed due to any reason I just go to see sunset near my place hardly 2km away. It's a stress buster with earbuds in and watching migrant birds crossing river. Ain't those birds more free and independent than us? Like they don't give a damn 🕊️ about future and enjoy the present. Very less car and almost 0 traffic ⛔. People still use bicycles and cycle repair shop>garages. Life is slow and peaceful. People go to sleep at 9-10pm and wake up at 5-6am. Life is too easy. Cost of a family with 2acre land is hardly 25k/m here. Sometimes I wonder why chase 2 lac/month sacrificing so much in a so called developed city. Society is ambivert. Pizza 🍕 🍔 burger biryani is trying to enter these areas. But I don't miss swiggy. Zeptonis redundant here. I have doing a lot research on these D2C brands , these brands are burning VC cash in ads and influncer marketing. And what just for topline !! When will the focus or plan to focus on bottomline !! Are these guys playing for valuation game or they really want to build profitable business out of it ?? Please correct me if i m wrong , also paying influncers butt load money wothout knowing the ROI , i think influncer marketing is a bubble which is yet to burst and the next phase is influencer led sales !!!
