The issue was my other teammate had no social life and was working the whole weekend and delivering bad code in fast time. Which led to everyone in the team to do this to get a good rating after the year. It was toxic but it taught me a lot in terms of tech and life experience to decide what I want and what I don’t.

At my previous workplace, almost every PM did it regularly and also put 'OOO to complete documents' as their Slack status

I will start with mine.   “Took leave on several days to complete pending documents & items”  My company is not bothered about a person bandwidth🥲  Is this the same everywhere?

This works only  with western managers. India managers will take it to heart and make it an ego issue. The effect will be felt on something else. If the manger is a man, he will let it go if you correct yourself next  time. If the manager is a woman, will never see the end of it. 

Always treat  Indian managers like street dogs. You dont pet them , but you dont throw stones at them either..

One of the founders at my past workplaces told me 

"24 year old like yours must not take a week of vacation" 😂

(The vacation in discussion was "official time off" for EVERYONE + 2 extra days that I took as PTO)

I am interviewing with an early stage startup in Gurgaon. As part of their leave policy, they offer only annual leaves which you earn at a certain rate every month. They do not offer any sick leaves or casual leaves to employees. Is that even legal? Have you heard of similar policies elsewhere?

For context: Weekends are off. So just fri WFH. This is a Series B startup. I am not even asking for a leave but WFH for just 1 day. I joined recently. The only thing I did wrong was possibly informing a little too late.

Want to get opinion if I am overthinking or this classifies as toxic culture in startups where you are expected to push limits above and beyond regularly and sometimes weekends.

Not a great culture, also you don’t have to give the actual reason, instead say due to some unavoidable work or family health reason you will need to wfh. Its a good way of seeing what kind of employer one is, when they also treat urgencies like that. Indians feel they need to give a detailed explanation as to why they deserve wfh or leave, whereas in international companies, you just have to inform the manager.
