Does your family judge you if you tried but failed ?

I often wonder if as a software developer, I'm not making much of a difference in the society. Sure, our company as a whole makes an impact, but individually, it feels like we don't have any visual effect in society. When I see doctors getting so much respect and making such a big impact, or when I notice the good deeds of IAS/IPS/ Army Officers, I can't help but question what I'm contributing to society except paying taxes which too are eaten up by corrupt politicians. 🥲

I’ll start first, Within my lifetime, we sent a spacecraft to the moon. We also succeeded in our Mars mission on the first try. There are seldom moments like such that remind us that we are one country. We are a force to be reckoned with, continually working to move the needle of progress. We’ve achieved so much and there’s way more to achieve. But I’m hopeful. We’ve gotten this far and we will go further than ever before.

As I'm entering a new stage of life, I'm starting to reevaluate my career priorities. In my 20s, I was all about climbing the ladder and chasing prestige. Now, I'm more focused on finding work that aligns with my values and allows for a balanced lifestyle. Have any of you gone through a similar shift? How did it change your career trajectory? And how do you define success for yourself now versus when you first started out?

Hi, I am a regular IT guy, working as an SDE in a product-based company, making around 12 LPA with 2.5YOE and a background from a named Tier 1 (or Tier 2, depending on your perspective) private college. I am currently on a job hunt and max could leverage up to a 50% hike! I'm noticing many folks with base salaries ranging from 20 LPA - 25 LPA and overall CTCs in the range of 35 LPA - 40 LPA with the same 2-3 years of experience! I'm happy for them, but I'm wondering why I'm struggling to reach those levels despite my efforts. Have overall salary ranges increased? Am I stuck in the same salary bracket? It's frustrating and makes me feel inadequate at this stage of my career. Some might say that salary isn't everything, but personally, I have certain commitments that require a better-paying job. However, whenever I pursue opportunities, they seem just out of reach. Feeling low, hence felt like writing them down here. Thanks

Most of us have had financially restrictive childhoods and now earning well above our parents at the same age. (You got the point, Don't come at me with inflation and all) It has been ingrained in you to save resources and spend less. Deprive now, so your future can be better. But future is uncertain How have you built the mindset or financial habits that let you enjoy the present and also not worrying about the future?

Having almost 6yrs experience with single digit salary 😭 every friend and colleague are making a killing every recruiter I speak to just offer x% over last CTC but not the amount I ask stating budget issue. This is taking a toll on my mental health unable to focus on up skilling / working in current org plz help not sure what to do.

It's a very Indian mindset to treat or look down upon people who make a lot of money. We find some or the other reason to bring them down. We call them names. Though most of our life problems can be solved by money. Just like there is an American dream I think the Indian dream is to stay middle class and bitch about people who do the hard work. I understand that there are certain classes of people who are truly disadvantaged in terms of caste or patriarchy but for others it's just being lazy and reluctant to change. Bitching about people who are successful just gives them a sense of achievement without actually putting in the effort.

Hey! A bit background about me, 2023 grad, cs @ tier 1 university, currently at SDE role earning ~1.5L. I do have a decent network, good communication skills (sab to bolte hai), good drive ig. I’m also good at CS and probably can get good offers and good growth (high rating on codeforces). I was always aligned with entrepreneurship and I definitely don’t see myself working at a job after ~7-8yrs My father wants me to join the family business in the next year, I can prolly make 10x within months and will be having full ownership later, might be able to grow much more later. Simply it seems like joining is the obvious choice, but that means sacrificing my whole career that could have been different, smart friend group, and other pros. Honestly passion is not an issue, I think earning money is my only life goal :p

I did everything by the book, I work with an elite firm, studied in an elite institution. I tried to work hard, although I know it may not be the hardest but I am sure it was not the least. I did my MBA from a tier 1 uni and now work in a tier 1 firm, but somehow it never translates into money. My current pay is 20LPA after 6 years work ex and a tier 1 MBA. I see many young kids with packages 50LPA plus, and no not only SDEs. school mates who used to party when I was a nerd, and are now influencers earning 1 CR a month. On average I see everyone earning more than me at my age, whether corporate, father’s business or social media. I have started to believe that money comes to the lucky, you may work hard or not, but it does not correlate to wealth. I am looking for viewpoints from people who do not think so. Would like to know a new perspective. P.S. - those who say I am not trying to switch correctly, I have tried but somehow they only have low paying roles for me

I started with a job of 8k/month as a data entry operator after my B.Tech from an expensive tier 4 college which I paid for using an education loan. Had major inferiority complex. Probably still do. Took some 5 years years after b.tech to pay that off. Didn't have a job in 2 of those years. Worked as a milkman for those two years. Anyway..somehow I got a meaningful job in 2017 and today I am a tech lead with 70L base and some equity. Reached this giant(atleast in my mind) milestone of 1 Cr this month. Could not have even dreamt of this much money some 5 years back. Yet, now some family members and family tell me "tukka lag gya tera" (you got lucky). But I keep feeling that I did kinda work hard for this in a way but it hurts when a first uncle or first cousin says "Tukka lag gya tera". Ofcourse now I feel financially confident(somewhat) and I try enjoy whatever pressures I can. Just wanted to share my little story.
