It depends on stage of the startup. For Seed - series B

  • It's basically a growth/strategic partnership role, identifying new segments and business strategy.
  • Ideally it should not exist at this stage and Founder should have more involvement

Series B +

  • When the team size expands, it can serve various purpose
  1. Take on the new 0-1 initiative and try to experiment with them or build a function
  2. Act as a generalist in different functions, identify the problems and report your observations back to the founder - It could be Hiring, Product, Sales, Ops
  3. Help the founder in raising capital.
