Got assigned in Data Engineering role as a fresher

I recently got placed in a good product based company and was assigned in Data Engineering team 1-2 weeks ago as an intern. I always wanted to be a Software Development Engineer and I really like to develop applications, websites etc and I also really enjoy it. I even purchased an expensive system design book to learn and implement how they build scalable apps etc because I find it very interesting. I never persued the data domain because I don't like stats and all the maths. Avoided AI/ML in college. Sure, I can work and learn about it in my free time, but I don't prefer it as a job right now. I couldn't develop my interest in data engineering after researching about it online for hours. Yes, the stack is cool and different, they build pipelines and all but it looks boring to me. I also read few comments saying that freshers are rarely hired for this role and one should work as an sde for few years before switching to this domain, and also they are paid ≤ SDEs depending on the company. What should I do now? Please guide me seniors🙏 Am I stuck in this forever or can I switch to SDE anytime I want? I am open to trying this role but then I am also scared that it'd may be too late or too hard to switch to SDE by then..? P.s. This is my first job, never worked in a company before so I don't know how things work.

Even I am working on my first job since past 1.5 years and I am lucky to work in the area similar to what I had thought during my education. But let me tell you one reality. It is not that the jobs in market will be available based on our skill, but we have to adapt to the skill set of a job. Adaptability is important in industry because if not you, someone else will and take your position. It is right of you to dream of an area of your interest, but as the market conditions are not good, I would suggest you to look at the opportunity you have at your hand. Maybe you will find something more interesting in it while working. From what I understand it should not be difficult to switch from data engineer to SDE in future. But I will let others comment on this

Thank you, I'll learn it for sure. But I still think about asking my manager to change my team. Would it be good idea/too early to ask? It can also impact my conversion right?

I have always wanted to try my hands on everything but for a job I prefer SDE only atleast for now. I worked on frontend, backend, mobile apps, made good projects during college while practicing leetcode all the time and also had high cgpa. I love it so much that I do leetcode on mobile all the time. I never expected myself to be in a different domain at the start of my career and I am unable to digest this right now..

I would say....be prepared to hop on to the next better SDE opportunity. I had the same story after college... Joined a big tech product company with very boring tech stack but switched after 1.5 yrs nobody given a fucks... You need to clear interviews and be able to deliver stuffs in the next job

Dude exact same thing is happening with me. Even I’m confused but i took the job, although i got a SE role but the work is of a data engineer. The job market is really bad so didn’t have a choice as such

Data engineering role might not have AI/ML in it. It would be more of Data infra building and maintaining. Please cross check with team member once.

Yeah no AI/ML here. I just dont know if aiming to build apps and backend which scales and gets used by millions of users is more interesting or working with data..

I am a fresher working as a Data analyst in a growing startup. My current role doesn't include much of coding just python and SQL and sometimes little bit ML work. Currently handling 2 projects, and some of PM work to define some roadmaps. I like engineering and coding in whole and want to know more. So do I switch to some SDE role or is there are more paths after Data analytics? I know ML, DL and NLP but not sure will it be a great choice to make career primarily in Data science. Hi All, I have 6 YOE. Initial 2.5 years I worked as Backend developer in Python, Django, AWS and Little bit JS. After that all of my experience is in Data Engineering mostly in GCP (have few certifications as well.) Currently I am working at Walmart. Most of the work I do in Data side is adhoc and projects are also not upto the expectations lot of manual work is also there. I am not really enjoying my career as data engineer. Pay is good. I am thinking to move back to Software Engineering, 1. is it a good idea for long term? 2. What skill should I focus on if I have to move back? 3. Is it just the projects that I am working on making data engineer look less interesting to work ?

after reading the comments I am more confused coz I’m very stubborned with one decision that SDE is not the work I want to do , I really wanna get in ML based jobs like Data Science or AI Engineer or Data Analyst… I know market is not good for data Engineers now but I wanna settle in Other foreign countries for my livelihood and so wanna get in to this field but then a question arises , should I do my masters or work in a company for 1-2 years to gain experience and then search for foreign companies, can someone help me really need one

Dilemma regarding Data Science Internship

I’m a final year computer science undergrad and planning for ms cs. I have an offer in a startup as data science intern but I’m new to it and a bit skeptical about it. The company is great but told me that my most of the work would be around data pre-processing, cleaning & visualisation and not developing machine learning models (will be given exposure). But my concern is that what if I want to pivot to software developer role after graduation, should I go with it or look for an SDE Intern position. Please help me here!

Switching to software engineering roles from data science

Hi, to give a little background, I started working as a data scientist in a quite well paying startup straight out of college. (CS grad from a tier-2 engineering college, NIT/IIIT) But due to having more interest in software engineering, I picked up mostly engineering work (I've mostly worked using Java, springboot, python, flask, fastAPI etc). But now after 1.5 years of experience i want to switch to swe roles, my query is, will my current role i.e. 'data scientist' be a road blocker, even if I've many engineering works to mention in my resume? And is there a way to resolve this, without switching roles internally, as the team said it takes 6-12 months to do this due to company policy, and i really don't wanna be stuck here for that amount of time anymore.
