Has anyone ever faced a situation where you perform excellent in some org but not in another?

My story - So I switched to a startup last year. I was initially super excited in solving problems. Asking questions and just being curious about everything in general. Then, some incidents of my manager's behavior and team folks has turned me into a person who is so fucking afraid of now asking questions, doing tasks. My stakeholder communication sometimes I miss on, some things that seem to be pretty obvious had I been my competent self of previous organization, I am missing out on. I don't communicate well simply because I don't want to face my current manager and team. There's huge disconnect as well. I am not at all excited to work everyday.

My friend was miserable in my previous org but now after switch he's damn happy and doing good!

I want to know if this is something that happens with you all? Or are you all like you fit in everywhere? Or is it just My problem and my incompetence? Because I am always reminiscing my past org and my performance there was exceptional!

I am sure it’s pretty common. Everyone as individual align better towards certain culture or practices. Like if ur work style matches more with break things, move fast but ur new company prioritizes measure twice, cut once - there’s a mismatch. You can slowly align towards it and maybe that’s what u are doing now naturally but since it goes against ur own work ethic, u feel underperformed. Anyway, if u give urself enough time (years) u would adjust anyway - granted people around u allow that to happen.

But how do I decide if all this is a way of nature saying that I don't belong here and I should switch or it's that I have to persist no matter what?

See ur next jump doesn’t guarantee same experience as last org. So might as well try to fight it out - try to experiment and see if that changes things. Even after that u don’t settle then it’s just not going to work for u. So might as well take the leap

But now they you got me here, I think we should just double down on ourself and fight. Fck ua manager and talk what you believe.

See, we should not be afraid of losing our job. If you are not in insane debt, and not pathetic with your job you will be more than bloody fine.

Maybe I will also follow this and stop taking bs at work...

I am not afraid of losing my job. I just don't want to work here. For me, connecting with my manager and teammates is important and that my manager cares about me. I used to get that in my previous org

This happened to me as well around 1 month ago where I was an exceptional team member in my old team, after switching teams of the same org (some restructuring at org level), the senior and lead engineers in the team were very rude and unapproachable. I was constantly getting the feeling that I'm not welcome in this team, but overcame the fear and started to over-communicate to my manager and my skip level and product guys over slack channel and common calls (started tagging senior engineer in a bigger forum where I needed some help so she is obliged to help). This helped me to ramp up quickly and I think the feeling of an outsider has vanished. But I miss my old team, it was super good and one of the best bunch of folks I have ever worked with 🙂

We spend more than 50% of our awake life on work. So have a high bar and don’t settle if you don’t have other constraints. Variables to optimise for - learning, peers / manager, culture etc. If you have tried enough times with the current team / role, explore an alternate role in the same org. or find another role outside.
