I'm relatively early in my career, and has been working as a Program Manager (it doesn't mean that I have anyone reporting to me). I love what I do. The pay is also decent. 

I also like software engineering (app development mainly). I used to code regularly and has got some apps on the Play Store as well (hobby projects, not big). 

I'm confused whether I should continue as a Program Manager (going down the managerial route) or switch to a Software Engineering role. I feel like I should get some software engineering experience before being in a role working closely with Software Engineers. But, another thought is why move away from something that I love doing. 

I'm a bit scared on taking a decision (grass would always be greener on the other side). I don't know anyone like me in the same route.

Note: I work at a fortune 50 organisation, awesome team/manager, and all of them are completely supportive of whatever decision I make. 

My manager is happy to help me grow in any direction (both at the same time as well), but spending energy on one would yield better results.

Note: I would definitely love to be a good manager down the lane (always liked working with people).

Hi All,

I have 8.5 years of experience. iit + iim (recent 1 year mba ). initially I worked at analytics KPOs , then I worked on my own startup. post that I worked with a b2c startup as a program manager . Worked in growth, analytics , cross functional etc etc 

Then post mba , I am again working at a startup managing a team of business analysts. 

I feel like my career is not really going anywhere. I have become a "generalist" suitable for early stage startups but I do not want to work at startups any more. 

what do I do ? How do I move into bigger companies for better stability OR find a stable suitable startup where I can become a VP (but then a VP of what ? )

I’m working at an Indian startup that raised their series B recently... I’ve been here long enough to wear multiple hats and currently doing Solutions consulting(fancy way of pre sales)

Now as the company is getting out of early stage, it looks like now they want more specialists. So I’ve been asked if I’d want to continue doing solutions engineering or switch to being a manager in CX(onboarding, support or success)….cant become a manager in SE as there are very limited no of folks here. I’d want to know if folks here have some guidance on when should one look to switch the path from an IC to a Manager career ladder.

Some additional info:
1. Personally I feel I should top out my compensation range as an IC before taking a manager role as my assumption is managers don’t get paid highly in India (let me know if that’s not the case)
2. I’ve more than 7 years of professional experience 
3. Fairly good with people and would like to go the manager route someday but I feel if I switch now it might hamper my long term earning potential. Is this thinking right?

Would appreciate any help that folks can provide to be able to make this decision. Or any guidance on how to think about this as well(if I’m being shortsighted).  TIA!

I have job hopped and i am in my 4th stint in just over 4 yrs. 
Out of the 3 hops:
1 was due to covid
1 was due to layoff
1 was because I wanted to switch to a product based company.

I am looking to make 1 switch coz my current workplace (a startup) is very shaky and I have been in it for 7 months only.
I want to join a stable org / big stable startup where I can spend a good part of my career.

Do you guys think it is a right move?
Will it look bad on my CV and impact transition into leadership roles?

I am from tier 1 undergrad and tier 1 MBA college. I have total 6 yrs of experience (2 before MBA, 4 post MBA).

What are your thoughts tech industry and job opportunity post 45. My plan is to get FIREd by that time but curious what roles if any do you take on at this age?
Do we all take up as managers and become the thing we hate?
Any scope of still remaining an IC and getting paid a similar income?
I have been mostly working in startups and the oldest guy I have worked with was 37 and I am generally see very few old people in tech, though I have 0 MNC exposure.

What are the possible detriments of becoming a manager too early in one's career?

Overview: 
Everyone around me, be it old school friends to the people in the bangalore startup ecosystem are planning to or already in the process of doing an MBA. 

What is happening:
Most of the people I know, either are going for a tier 1 MBA in India or colleges like “Carnegie Mellon”/ “INSEAD”/ “NUS” these are really good places. 

Why am I concerned:
I dont have great acade, GEM candidate so I have decided to not pursue CAT at all, and MBA outside India is too expensive. 

I feel like my job and career are going fine with 4 years of professional experience I am making 25LPA in marketing. I am not keen on doing an MBA but I dont want to regret later.

I consider myself to be fairly smart but what happens when I am competing with people who have great brand names on their resume and are actually smart. 

People on GV with more experience, have you gone through this struggle? 


Sidenote: I also have friends who have cleared IIM ABC, ISB and not gone, because they just wanted the admit letter. Which is brave lol!

What is the future scope of the PM job role...will it still be relevant after 10 years, Is going to IIMs spending close to 25 lakhs in this economy to get into a PM job role justified??
Context: I know many people will say you don't need IIM to break into PM, But considering I'm a 25 Male, from tier 3 college...currently working as a product designer with 8 lpa...so I think the only way to reach 25-30 lpa in hand by 28 is by joining IIMs

I have been working in a small bootstrap startup ( 50 employees). The company is profitable and have great culture and ethics ( best out of the 4 companies I have worked for). 

I am expecting a decent salary hike (30%), career and learning growth. Should I look for a larger organisation or make up my mind for a long term career in my current organisation.

I’m currently working at a B2B SaaS company as a PM. I have a great interest in analytics but not getting enough exposure here and my role has just got so redundant and more like project manager. 
It’s been really difficult in the last couple of months as growth seem to have stopped and I am really scared about my career.

Hey folks,
I'm wondering what kinda role I should pursue next after product management. 
I'm done with this role, works vary from company to company and team to team. It's tough to make people understand the difference between pre-PMF products & mature products, and how the metrics impact vary across the spectrum. 
And this completely changes the equation of your appraisal or your promotion as well. 
I don't see myself working in the same kind of role after 5 years.
So I'm wondering what kinda role I should look out for?
My general interests are more analytics & strategy centric. What do you guys think??

Where to go after Product???

I was curious, that what will happen to the people who are right now working in growth, program managers, or in fact as business analysts, SDEs after 15 years.

 I am 25 Years old right now, and all I can see is people aged between 21-30 in startups. 30-35 year old people are less than 5% of the workforce. After 10 years, all my age group people will be 35, and all the roles I see at that age, are too scarce. 

Will it be too difficult to switch jobs then, or career, hikes will kinda stagnate there? 

Want to know from other experienced people that where does the crowd go?

What after 15 YOE?

I am close to 15 years ex. So probably i can answer i guess. In my area of work, i see all the less experienced folks not much capable in understanding the whole picture of business for creating roadmaps and strategies , cannot do stakeholder management much and moreover do not understand failsafe situations . That way i feel my job is safe. I can also do the job which my 2 year experience person does and in a better way and can also work like my manager who is probably 20 years experience and lead the teams.  
 As long as one is technically relevant , experience is a boon for orgs.
