How is the Solution Manager role?

I will join a IT service company soon as a solution manager in AI/cloud domain. Would like to know how is this role? What could be the future options for me and what other roles/companies can I switch to if i think?

I think it is a pre-sales role. You would be working on putting together a response to RFPs of clients/prospects. So based on their requirement, you would be expected to craft a solution in your response describing how your company can meet their objectives. Also, you will work on pricing, delivery timeliness.

If it actually turns out to be a presales role then just be aware that it can be very demanding sometimes. You will have to work on strict deadlines, collaborate with multiple teams to obtain information and work late hours. When you are not working on a RFP response, you could be sitting idle swatting flies for weeks.

Yes, it comes as a pre-sales role. What could be the future possibilities under this role for me?

It's a kind of role that always has job openings. If your team actually manages to win RFPs, then your company may give you additional bonuses over and above your CTC. This role is very common across service based companies so it will be very easy to switch among service companies. If you spend good amount of time in this role, you can eventually think of moving to sales role and get onsite opportunities ( other than US because of strict visa rules).

Hearing this title for the first time in my 18+ years of exp. IMHO, fancy titles are just becoming irrelevant. At the end of the day, you are either a tech person or a management person. Solution Manager role sounds gimmicky to me.

It's a management role. I am new to this industry that's why don't know much about the similarities accross different positions/titles.

Here’s how I would advise you. More than getting into what this title does, directly check with the company about the job functions, department, the projects they handle. I think you’ll get a fair idea about what is expected out of you.
