I have been recently laid off, and I didn’t know how much I needed this break until I got one.

From past 6 years, I have been working continuously without any breaks. Now I don’t feel like joining anywhere. But I am scared also I need to pay my checks and I only support myself. 

So how much break can I take? Or should I give interviews and get a job and ask them if I can join after a month or so ??

For me 5 - I start by 11 and end by 7 but take an hour lunch break, 4-5 tea/coffee breaks and some gossips - I tracked one day and it was 5.2 hrs.

How many hours do you actually work per day?

I have adhd so I don't (read : can't) work until 2 days before sprint is about to get over then wrap the stuff up with anywhere between 8-10 hours pn both days.

Going to the gym. Very underrated life lack, I’m less depressed that I was a couple of years back, reversed at least 3 years of age and helped me deal with chronic back pain by strengthening the lower back muscle. Only wish I knew this a decade back.

I’ve lately been struggling with keeping my energy levels up through the day. My lifestyle isn’t that bad. Decent sleep, frequent exercise, I’m happy etc

But I find myself zoning out of conversations and this is affecting my ability to be “liked” at the workplace.

It’s not even about being liked, but as a person I don’t like not being able to 100% be there for people when they’re talking to me. It’s what makes us human, in a way.

People who are generally energetic, how do you do it?

I was in a similar situation where I felt lost and disconnected throughout the day. Things that worked for me:- 
  
 (1) Cut caffeine and sugar completely - strictly 0% consumption. Caffeine is really bad for sleep quality. 
 (2) Increase vitamin D intake - sunlight and supplements. Deficiency leads to general fatigue and brain fog. 
 (3) Improve sleep quality - have camomile tea, get a good mattress and comforter, sleep before 1 AM to be in deep sleep in the 2 AM to 4 AM range 
 (4) Cold showers - not sure if they do anything at all but I've felt a noticeable increase in energy levels after doing them (even if placebo)

P.S. we have 1 hr lunch break scheduled in work day. So I consider second half AFTER lunch.
My boss wants second half before lunch, because who eats for 1hr 😶‍🌫️

Is it advisable to take a break to switch jobs if you have a hard time preparing while having one ? How significant will be the impact on my profile. Financially I am well placed and can afford to take one.

Details for context:

Current Pay - ~20 LPA.

For years, if there's one thing that gets my goat, it's people interrupting lunch for work. After the lockdown it has become so blatant that people give you questioning looks as if lunch is secondary. Fucker, I'm not a foodie  but I work to so I can eat. 

So fuck all of them. If you set a meeting with me during lunch, I'm not skipping lunch. The video will be on, I will eat with my hands, and you WILL watch me eat. Don't like it? Don't meet me during lunch. As simple as that. 

Just a silent and probably impotent protest by a helpless employee.

Alright so this post is coming from a place of guilt so do not take it as bragging.

I have been employed for more than 16 years now and routinely clocked 60+ hour work weeks till before COVID. Once WFH started, I found it difficult to adjust working from home (especially with two toddlers) and found myself spending most of the time taking care of the kids (which I thoroughly enjoyed). Wife is a doctor and has erratic hours so I thought kids need the reassurance of at least one parent being around most of the time. Around 2021, I realised that my fitness has significantly gone down so I enrolled in a sports club and began playing squash regularly and religiously in the mornings. 30 minute sessions became 45 minutes which became 1 hour to now close to 2 hours (coupled with some running and swimming). By the time I login to work (I have UK hours: 11 am to 8 pm), I feel quite tired and at times take post lunch naps (during office time). My health has significantly improved but I have found that I am simply unable to stay productive at work for more than 4 hours ( around 4 pm to 8 pm). 

I am pretty good at what I do and one of the few technical people in a team full of Excel worshippers so one can argue that I get things done relatively faster than average colleagues. However, I have a serious fear that this level of slacking may get me in trouble and could even render me unemployable as I get older. Is this just a phase or a manifestation of a midlife crisis? Have others experienced something like this in their late 30s early 40s?

I see a lot of posts about WLB, I want to know what do you consider as a decent WLB. I will go first.

1. Leave early if the work for that day is done
2. No pings and calls post work hours, there are always exceptions and thats okay, should not become a norm
3. Respecting when someone is in vacation and not disturbing them.
4. Not rejecting leaves 

I will add more in comments If more comes to my mind.

At my current company i usually am occupied for more than 8 hours and i cannot do something like "reading a Blog to enhance my skillset, watch interview prep videos, learn something new or explore another zone of development like a new stack or something". After my working hours i give time to my pet dog, family and a little bit to myself.

Listen folks, you should totally work 70 hours over two weeks. Most of you do already. 

If you factor in lunch and some tea breaks that you normally take during the course of the day, the most productive hours you put in are about 7 hours a day for 5 days a week. So 70hrs is totally doable.

After reading the recent #Amazon post and people being truly open about it. I'd like to highlight what me and my Myntra colleagues at the same level faced. The level of emotional and mental harassment I went through was extreme. 9-5 extending till 9am to 11pm, i.e 12+ hrs everyday with no incentives, often my manager would ask me to connect at 12:30 a.m. assign tasks and say, complete this atleast by morning. Even on days when we're in-office till 10:30 at night working on displays and whatnot, after completion they'd say now go home and work on concepts, which is insane, work when? Most often our weekends would get consumed in work too as there's always, always something urgent everyday to prevent you from taking offs. It wouldn't be coming off as a surprise if people are saying they haven't slept for 3 nights straight, because they'd say so have I. All that at a package of 5.35 LPA, it's ridiculous.

One thing I really hated during WFH days was MEETINGS DURING LUNCH/DINNER TIME, after a few weeks when it became repetitive, I started saying, but it didn't stop as they would smartly schedule those at pre-lunchtime so no one can deny as it's not lunch yet, then it'll stretch till 3 or 4. Then after a point I started bringing this up in mid conversation in meetings saying "Is it alright if we continue this post lunch? I need to go have lunch" and the same will happen during dinner. They'd say "go quickly have something and connect afterwards".

No appreciation for all the hardwork, sleepless nights. So, started keeping healthy boundaries, politely refusing to work on weekends, letting her know I've appointments or I'm cleaning my room or doing laundry today which they used as a way to gaslight me by saying "you disappear on weekends, what's wrong with you now, you used to work fine, seems like you don't want to work here anymore, please be there this weekend and do this". I was still committing to their 9-5 stretching till 8 evening tho.
