It’s actually not harsh.
If you’ve managed in any capacity, you know PIP doesn’t work. It’s just delaying the decision. It hardly ever fixes performance. And if you’re putting someone on PIP, you’ve already made up your mind.
Pretty sure some rando will still reply with “asli ID se aa” crap, so I’ll tell you that I have nothing to do with Unacademy and don’t like a lot of what they do. But here he’s right.
If you like anything about what Unacademy is today (not what it was) then you know nothing about what Unacademy is today.

So PIP is a must. Can’t simply uproot someone’s life like that.
Notice period is a fairly redundant thing, because anyways employees don’t work in the notice period as we are busy with the job search. Meanwhile the organisation is counting on their deliverables (whatever little they may be).
So may have a KT for 5 working days. Provide a severance that’s in the employment contract and that could be a fair win-win for both parties.

Unacademy is so surprising but, also feels like their full business will never be profitable as a whole. The K12 segment is tucked because parents prefer physical learning spaces and offline spaces dont scale. The AI is a joke. The LMS and course selling software is in a space that has never been profitable in India. And the upskilling wing while profitable is in a hugely competitive space.
In a way, EdTech never deserved the valuations it got as a whole because It is so hard to scale beyond a certain point
