There’s no real formula as PRDs depends entirely on maturity of product/feature. How to solve then? 
  
 Communicate - Once you get task to write PRD, ask for 2-3 days to provide an estimate. Write down all the potential areas which you would be including, put line items in scope/out-of-scope. Discuss with your engineering counterpart the order of releasing stories/PRDs. Once this alignment is done, share this plan with your product leadership. Let them go and fight the battle(s) with the CEO.

Also the CEO is imagining this project will be delivered in next 1 month.

I recently transitioned from an intern to a FTE in a startup. I'm working on a SaaS product as an APM.

I have been taking up a lot of work, interacting with devs, QA, designers but neither do I feel that my manager notices what all I'm working on, nor does he seem satisfied by my work. (All my PRDs need to be refined 3-4 times 😢).

I'm afraid of negative reviews and more about the job itself. I rejected 2 of my campus offers, one of them being at an IB, to join this startup, but things don't seem to be going that great.

Workload is not an issue, I'm willing to take up more things, atleast as of now, but I feel that my manager doesn't let me pick more items as he feels that I'm not performing upto the mark writing the PRDs.

Could you guys please help me with it? I actually need some guidance around the same.

Manager not satisfied with work

My tech team is blaming prds for delayed delivery of projects. But i am not sure if this is even a correct expectation. The design file had complete flows and written guidelines. Tech team said they wanted that level of clarity in the prd as well. What should i do? Btw We are a startup.

I’ve worked at multiple orgs:
1. Sometimes prd are written for the sake of it. Contains no details. Usually engineers closely work with pm and implement stuff
2. In other scenario active discussion happen on prd and then stakeholders meet and take final call
3. In some orgs prds are just less of prds and more of timeline docs.

As an early PM with 2 years of product experience (3+ if you throw in analytics roles I’ve done before), what will be a good fit role for me?

3. Founders office roles 

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of going into each role after a long APM stint (slightly less than 2 years, was their walking GPT for every tec-product-business thing they did, also was informally managing 3-4 people)

Work culture has become ultra toxic. Managers have started nano managing and literally are a pain in the ass. Product giving unrealistic timelines and leadership agreeing on the same without even consulting the developers and even if the developers are raising concerns, no fucks are given infact they are made to realise that this is how a startup should work. Literally everyone is working their asses off and still unable to meet the deadlines. Empathy is completely lost and WLB is a sham. People including me want to switch but are not even getting time to prepare.

This is all trickling down from the Leadership, they are trying to cut down costs by any means. Already had one round of layoffs, now they are doing silent layoffs in the form of PIPs. 
  
 Also, Leaders have lost the long term focus and are trying to find out more and more short term projects related to profitability.  
  
 There was always this pressure of work, but in the past 7-8 months this has become unbearable with no empathy in the organisation.

Lessons you've learnt during corporate life

I just want to know how designers and pms are placed in a company? 

Because where I work I feel the PM is really dumb and she doesn't understand ux or even a bit a sense of visual design on how ui should work. She says "I don't really care how a button looks as long as it's there on the page". 

And I keep her in loop for feedbacks and she just doesn't understand the problem statement. Initially I thought maybe I'm not explaining it correctly but it's almost a year now and I feel she's dumb. 

She's actually a friend of the CEO so she agrees to whatever he says and he's kind of similar so I don't really know what to say. 

Also, I always work on a new project without having a PRD in place. So again is that how it's supposed to go where I do the PMs job and a product designers job or how is it? 

Any comments or thoughts are appreciated 🙏

There is this new PM who is making my life living hell. Sets up his own timeline without consulting me how much effort it will take me to execute. The requirements are fuzzy and changes while executing. I am having to delete a ton of my code because they can't keep the requirements frozen.

The problem is that, I am being pulled into meetings all day and I am having to code at night just to keep up with my tasks. My life has become work and I have no time for my self-care.

Haven't gone home in 6 months now. I don't know what to do now.

Who owns the quality of outcome ?

Met a PM from IIT / IIM with 4 years of experience. He is working at a  well know soonicorn at a salary of 17  lakhs per year . He used to draw 30 lakhs per year in his last role before we was laid off . Interesting Times ahead

Hi guys,

My question is that when the client releases the requirements for the project, in our company we have to estimate and then give those estimates to the client, if they are happy, they give us a project else look for a  different service provider.

But how can I give 100% proper estimation when I have never worked on that project, currently there is a project where we have to upgrade Java version of the app, I don't know how many things will break once I do it and the Project manager wants me to estimate it. 

But I don't know how can I give an estimate to him, what if I give very few days and it turns out many things are breaking, the PM will blame me then for giving poor estimate.

He is already trying to go aggressive on timeline so that our company can get the project.

How do you folks in service based companies deal with these estimation related issues when you haven't worked on the project because the client will give us contract based on those estimation only. Does the contract become void if we are not able to deliver on those estimates, who takes the blame for these?
