Real product managers don't write PRDs, they dictate terms. 
  
 To level up, start a podcast and dole out jargons and gyaan

Create linked separate documents, I don't consider PRD more than 6-7 pages at max. Good prds are about condensing insights. Separate out your designs and stories of they are what's causing the length increase

A PRD could be well over those pages if you’re building a completely new flow/complex feature.  
 I hope it’s properly structured, sectioned, and has details of handling all possible corner cases you could think of. 
  
 You might also consider different versions for your different stakeholder if that’s what taking a lot of space.  
  
 Insights, context setting, designs, high level flows, metrics - these all, in addition to the actual user stories and their acceptance criteria. Everything needs to be documented to avoid smooth execution.

How can a prd possibly be that long? 
 If I had to take a guess, you've probably packed 10 features into a single PRD.  
 If that's the case, always break it down into multiple feature requests.

Depends what the expectations are, get that cleared from the other party. But brevity is essential for a product manager, try to make it short.

PRDs are meaningful only if engineers and other stakeholders are able to read and understand the requirements easily. The information should be in such a way that it’s easy to grasp. 30 pages is a overkill, but focus on making it easy to understand (include flow charts, wireframes, frameworks etc) than on number of pages

Can someone share any real Prd because i am writing prd for a website and it is crossing 30 pages is that okay?

1. Sometimes prd are written for the sake of it. Contains no details. Usually engineers closely work with pm and implement stuff
2. In other scenario active discussion happen on prd and then stakeholders meet and take final call
3. In some orgs prds are just less of prds and more of timeline docs.

How to write PRDs for features with a wider scope?

My tech team is blaming prds for delayed delivery of projects. But i am not sure if this is even a correct expectation. The design file had complete flows and written guidelines. Tech team said they wanted that level of clarity in the prd as well. What should i do? Btw We are a startup.

I recently transitioned from an intern to a FTE in a startup. I'm working on a SaaS product as an APM.

I have been taking up a lot of work, interacting with devs, QA, designers but neither do I feel that my manager notices what all I'm working on, nor does he seem satisfied by my work. (All my PRDs need to be refined 3-4 times 😢).

I'm afraid of negative reviews and more about the job itself. I rejected 2 of my campus offers, one of them being at an IB, to join this startup, but things don't seem to be going that great.

Workload is not an issue, I'm willing to take up more things, atleast as of now, but I feel that my manager doesn't let me pick more items as he feels that I'm not performing upto the mark writing the PRDs.

Could you guys please help me with it? I actually need some guidance around the same.

Manager not satisfied with work

Worked for a not particularly prestigious company as a developer for a few years before doing an MBA and moving into product management. Tier 1 institutes all the way through. I've been a product manager for 3 years now, in some pretty reputed companies.

At this point, I feel like the product management role is just not for me - I do not get job satisfaction out of it. The work is not particularly interesting or challenging, and talking to people all day feels like a chore. Its no fun to be creating random reports for leadership based on wherever the winds of the day blow. Plus tbh, I could be making far more money if I had remained a developer. Just cannot see myself doing this kind of work 10 years down the line.

Thinking of applying for some dev roles - it'll take some practice, but I could probably crack senior developer interviews. 

What does the community think? Is there stigma for people who ditch product roles for development roles? Are there people who even do this? Am I being realistic about this?

feeling like I am literally in the worst phase of my life. Our company is taking ownership of an abroad project and those abroad folks are not supportive or even if they support us then they give little information so that we can't take ownership. so we freshers have to figure out everything, and now even after figuring out, my manager and higher management asks me anything with respect to the product(features, deployment, anything literally- it's a big & complex project) even though I am a fresher and don't even have the proper knowledge and then ask us to explain to them what we know, and it's literally frustrating to explain to every single guy every single time. Because the manager asks to prepare to explain to him and then to the higher manager and then whenever something is there they keep asking again and again to give a presentation or our ideas about it, but they don't even ask abroad folks when they are the one who is doing the work. I just feel like I can't keep up with this and I want to resign. How to say no to the manager for doing a particular work again and again or should I resign because I am feeling very low right now and still after 1 year it looks like I have wasted the time because I got to write code for maybe 5% and 90-95% feels like college presentation. Every time there's something and they ask the same thing 3-4 times, sometimes it would be give the x info or then y info and like this only  and because of that i can't do the real work or work on new features because the Indian manager and higher officials keep giving extra work which they should ask from US folks. What should I do please suggest

Frustrated from job

Application Engineer

I have been working as an APM in a B2B startup for 12 months now; 5 months internship and 7 months as FTE after graduation.

My work revolves around gathering requirements for features by talking to experts and conducting research, conducting impact analysis; getting initial themes and liaising with Designers to get the final UX, leading the implementation phase with Developers and QA and then getting the release and feature documentation.

Other tasks involve liaising with people from Marketing, Client Partner and Sales to acquaint them with the new features, conducting internal demos, and also looking after client requests/ bugs and getting them fixed.

One issue that I feel however is that my PRDs need revision by my senior. I don't think they are bad, given I include all the things that I feel (based on my experience with the Development pod) come in necessary usually. It might be the case as well that my senior likes to put the requirements documented in a way he likes.

Want suggestions, is this the correct amount and type of work, or something else that I must be picking up too at this stage of career, and how the career shapes ahead in general, in this domain?

Work as an APM

Last week, I got a list of 10 features to be implemented. I have no research on the features. But I have to write the PRDs for all of them. How do I communicate to my manager, the ETA to write the PRD. Since every feature could require different research time, different scope. 

Also the CEO is imagining this project will be delivered in next 1 month.

Got laid off from my first product management job. Was the company’s first APM hire and built 70% of their client facing features from 0 to 1.

As an early PM with 2 years of product experience (3+ if you throw in analytics roles I’ve done before), what will be a good fit role for me? 

I’ve narrowed them down to 3 
1. PMM
2.PM-1
3. Founders office roles 

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of going into each role after a long APM stint (slightly less than 2 years, was their walking GPT for every tec-product-business thing they did, also was informally managing 3-4 people)
