How to negotiate salary as a designer? 🚨

It's been a year and a half since I began my career as a User experience designer at a product company (my first job). The startup I work at has not started generating revenue yet.. and is running on the funds raised in the pre-seed round. The founders are an amazing bunch of people and so is the team. I'm super happy working here, but the only thing I would like is a salary raise since my salary hasn't been revised since I joined. My current CTC is 5 LPA and I own ESOPs worth approx 2L. All of us at the office are close knit and this makes having the salary revision conversation even harder.. how do I initiate a conversation about this and not feel awkward?

Be non emotional when the topic is related to compensation. When working act like money doesn’t matter But when asking for a raise or negotiating act like it’s the only consideration. Your manager will try to appeal to your human side and try to remind you owe them something. In reality you are just providing your services for a sum of money. Be very level headed and mentally prepared before hand. You can just communicate on text message if you feel like your manager will have an upper hand if it’s a live conversation. I find it easy to think before I speak when I use text format.

Agree with above point. If uncomfortable, have the conversation on phone Or text. Have a document ready with the exact words you will say. Also, try predicting all the questions you are going to get and write their answers down. Do not use negative connotations, for eg: I will not be happy below 7 LPA - I'll be more comfortable if the CTC were pushed to 7 LPA.

Okayy, thanks! My conversation itself will be with the CTO only, there's a flat hierarchy (he comes to the office everyday). So having it over text or call is kinda tough. I can understand that at the end of the day I'm an employee only and that before joining there was a conversation on salary negotiation.. but now that I am a part of the company and love the culture, it's difficult to initiate a conversation on the same

Salary negotiations have nothing to do with loving the culture. What's deserved is deserved. Check out market trends ask for what you deserve and what you bring to the table.
