My last post (share.gvine.app/W6sQvon7d7H2qau89) saw a lot of opinions & criticism from many members in the community. For anyone who is offended by any of my comments, I truly apologize. Given the fact that some folks asked for constructive pointers, I decided to pen this down. 

These are just a set of points that I think would benefit some of you (not all!) in the long run:

- Speak at conferences & meet-up — We have definitely seen a boom of them in India. A lot of folks continue to miss out on them for various reasons. If you are working on some exciting stuff, go ahead and submit a proposal for an upcoming meetup. Trust me, this is definitely something that you can use to actually build your personal brand.

- Build some projects: Last month, I had to start taking interviews for the India team. I noticed the lack of projects, with many mentioning what they built during their college/interview assignments. Many complain that most of their work is proprietary, but it won't be bad to do a weekend hack around something they are passionate about.

- Contribute to open-source: For some folks, this might sound almost cliche! Anyone who gets to contribute to any noticeable project today, will open a box of opportunities. I have known dozens of devs by now, who started contributing (out of passion?) and went ahead to work on impactful projects (while making good money!). 

- Seek interesting problems: A lot of devs I have interacted with have not sought companies, but problems! One of our competitors saw their investor join them as a part-time engineer (yes, he loves to code!). Builders always have this mindset to build — Luckily we have so many programs today that inculcate this.

There are plenty of more ideas! The utmost emphasis for any SDE would be to become a Professional (with a capital P), become a craftsperson and take pride in your work! If you can't show anything substantial, your entire career building would be non-serious with sole purpose of money-making!

Hey Grapeviners, 

I need some serious help. 

Bit about myself - just graduated this month and working as an APM at a seed stage startup. I have 1.5 years of product experience and 3 years of overall experience. 

Lately, not sure why but I am loving what engineers do. Closely working with them, and I guess it's nostalgic for myself. Because I did coding for 6 months and moved on for some reason. So, I understand how tech actually works. Have got good feedback regarding this. 

At the same time, I am not really finding the true value of what I am doing everyday. Feels a void inside. 

Also, I am not able to discuss all these things in person with someone, because I fear that they will judge me after doing internships for 3 years, I still haven't figured out my career. Such a loser I am. 

I have been thinking about starting coding again and maybe switching to a coding job in the next 6 months maybe. But again it would be tough for me as I only got weekends for me to learn all this stuff. 

What do you all experienced folks suggest? What should I do?

Should the person be hiring a freelancer or do you have any other idea here?

Side Project:

My goal, for the foreseeable future, is to become the OG engineer, to be able to build anything in a weekend that my brain ideates

What's the most efficient way to learn new stuff? I wanna start implementing all these project ideas I get, but all these ideas are of such diverse tech domains. I wanna learn GenAI, IOT, blockchain, ML and also how to make drones, but things keep pooping up and finally jab thoda sa time milta hai toh college exams hit. 
So what's the trick to learn new cool interesting shit as fast as possible. Mastering all these domains won't be possible I know, I just wanna get enough knowledge to be able to make stuff

I have 3+ yoe in backend development in early stage startup, where mostly I worked on building things from scratch. Wanted your opinions on what all things I should focus on for next phase of my career. 

Here is what I want to achieve at the end of next 2 years.

1. Good wlb job with above avg pay(50 lpa) and wfh
2. Want to make my profile and skillset such that I am able to switch job easily if required.

Things to focus on for mid senior level engineer

Hey grapeviners, a data analyst this side (2 yoe). I aim to pivot into software engineering roles in the near future and that's what I do in my free time - prepare. I recently realized how much time I'll have on my hands if I start devoting my entire day to my studies and preparation - which includes building a project and studying advanced DSA. 
I can do this by resigning at my current job and then try to go all in on my "mission: domain change", and I definitely am okay to sit at home and put 3 months on this but nobody I discuss this with, advises me to quit my job for upskilling  (or cross-skilling in this case).
Most advice I get is to do this WITH my current job even if it takes longer to do so. I don't understand this - what will go so wrong if I resign and invest in myself?
I am well aware of the market situation rn for engineers and even understand that before you make these decisions, it is important to have a financial as well as mental runway. I am sorted on the financial runway part and for the mental runway - I think I'll enjoy the time off and having the liberty to architect my own day makes me drool already. I want to have the whole day to myself to learn backend, solve DSA questions, hit the gym, make meaningful and large chunks of progress daily. That's what I aspire to do post my notice period and I confidently believe in my abilities to do so, but I've been bogged down by all the advice I've got till now.
Am I stupid enough to believe in myself and think 3-4* months without a job is a boon for me in the long run than a bane? Am I stupid enough to believe that 3-4* months of working on myself will change me? Am I blind eyed by something or am I being plain delusional? 

I use 3-4 months coz that's what I think realistically will be enough for me to upskill, be interview ready and get a new job. And this time frame I've considered after a 2 month NP.

Why are people so against resigning before you have another offer in hand?

I am 3 years into my career and I have deep passion for Software engineering. I genuinely like it. I want to become a better engineer by going deep. But since the time of my internships in college, I have always been fascinated by startups and want to have one of my own. Now I have an idea(again very passionate about) and I’m working on it but my dilemma is that if I run a startup, it’s going to take me away from my other interest of engineering. Any thoughts?

Biggest dilemma of my life

I'm on bench for last 1.5 months and there is still no hope for any project allocation. Now I'm bored as well as scared for being idle. Someone please suggest something. I'm already learning new things in my spare time but is there any way of getting a project by connecting someone.

I'm a 24yo M, into frontend engineering making over 18LPA. I'm also working part time for a startup. 

I'm considering masters in the UK, US or Canada on the same order of priority.

my main reasons to even consider masters are the following
- meet people from different backgrounds
- get a better paying job with a work visa in a foreign country
- FOMO as a lot of people i know from college are now abroad studying/working

cons i see in this approach
- heavy on the finances
- economy isn't doing very well worldwide 
- job market is pretty bad rn
- i have everything here in India (family, friends, a well paying job)


my ideal case would be to get a visa sponsored job opportunity, but considering the economy and job market it seems impossible. 

would love to know opinions of some experienced folks or anyone who'd have some guidance for me. thanks.

need advice: should i consider a master's degree?

I am a 3YoE backend developer with little AI role and web development experience in the industry and I wanted to grow my career as more like an ✨Elite Engineer✨ who not just builds stuff but optimizes it to the core, oversees the future bottlenecks, the alternative approaches blah blah and you get the point. But the problem is that my learning is all over places. Please suggest/ guide you to be that ✨Elite Engineer✨ if you can. I want to continue to be a backend engineer (no more switching domain)

Disclaimer: I don’t want to do it because of the money (of course I need a future) but to have a solid understanding of it (it would be great if I end up as SDE)

I have been into programming since I was 15.
I have been working in the IT industry for the past 8 years and have been very successful in my domain because of my will to solve problems at work as interesting puzzles.

But this interest has slowly and gradually formed a huge part of my life to a level that if I am away from it for sometime, it gives me anxiety.

I am afraid this will affect my other parts of life like giving attention to my family, spending ample time with them.

As a process, I started to have no code Saturdays so that I am completely away from my laptop and spend time doing other mundane things. But this has not reduced the anxiety.
