Bro. If the question is about is data science degree worth it then ofcourse not. It has never been. Not sure who told you otherwise.  
    
  I guess the only route for freshers is via analytics firms like fractal, mu Sigma, tiger etc or startups.  
    
  But decent number of openings for experienced folk. And pretty good money as well. Even with that it's way less than the number of openings for SDEs. So is the competition relatively.

From someone I met yesterday, they concluded that it might not be dying but it has gotten extremely competitive at entry levels. It might be dying for the extreme noobs probably because these noobs can find better jobs (money/effort) in Product Management or Founder's Office yada yada.

Personally, it’s highly competitive now. I mean it was always easy to get in with a masters degree. Now it is hard to get in even with a PhD.

True, people get hired without masters degrees but only a small fraction of them are doing really great work. Your skills to progress matter more than a piece of paper here.

I am trying to transition from a business analyst to data scientist. I was wondering would a post graduation in the same be worth the expense and effort? Or having a significant presence in the community ( like kaggle, analytics vidya etc) is enough?

Talking to my nephew nowadays seems like the AI bug has gotten to him. Even going back during the early parts of my own career and even undergrad, ML and stats was still a fledgling field. Most of the smart folks went into SDE roles at top tech.

I still remember that even back then, hiring for roles like these were extremely theoretical. You would test even experienced candidates with undergrad topics which was slightly outdated tbh because most of the functions were abstracted away and it is obvious that you would not remember the matrix approach to finding weights for a simple linear regression model.

Has this changed now? Because I don't think interviews like that actually evaluate the accumulated wisdom that experienced professionals bring to the table.

I mean it is generally a waste of time for anyone to brush up manual derivations or remember SQL niche intricacies. Usually it is better to test for the 80% knowledge that is actually useful on a day to day basis. I mean if the main things that companies test in experienced candidates is something that can be rote-memorized from a book then they are not testing the right things no?

What do you all think? Just wondering about this for some time now especially considering the hype around AI?

I spoke to an experienced guy in the IT sector who has worked in many FinTech firms and consulting companies. He said when the data science hype started several years back, companies started getting funds from venture capitalists to set up data science wings . Companies went on a hiring spree with this money to hire data science professionals.

However, as the years passed, these data science departments failed to generate revenue as expected. Also, some aspects of data science will very likely be automated. So companies will probably hire less data science professionals and may even fire the resources hired earlier.

A lot of noise around AI taking coding jobs, which i fear might be real. Like not completely but you get my point. So how should one upskill themselves (especially the average folks, top 1/2% will not be affected in any field imo) for the upcoming shift? Like will data analytics/science or maybe ai/ml engineering jobs be on rise ? Should be start upskilling in those fields or any other suggestions? This should ideally unlock greater data generation per capita. This will ideally allow us to map geo-specific patterns across e-commerce/social-networks/OTT/Finance/Healthcare/EdTech etc. 

Data as a moat may just be real. Think of how you can switch to:
(in this order of preference)

Data Engineering > ML/AI/Data Science > Analytics

Having YOE under your belt when the wave picks up will take you further than anyone else.

Both pro-cons i'm seeing currently is:

Data science:
~ future technology
~ more interesting & diverse work 
Downside: so much competition as every college now opening new AI ML dept
& Because of low entry criteria anyone can jump to this field little interest or few online courses

Data Engineer:
~ Entry point is bit tough as Specific technology knowledge req which is generally not being taught in colleges,
Hence less competition 
Downside: Identical & boring tasks mostly

I want to move from Test Automation to Data Science. I have 9+ years of experience in test automation.
I have good 4+ years of experience in Python and Microsoft Azure. I was good at maths in school - 10+2 too (just mentioning that I don't fear maths)

Any advices for me how to start? I'm not able to figure out. Any leads would be highly appreciated
