Is market research nothing more than copying competitors?

Like I get it in tech but literally all D2C beauty, supplement companies have the exact same products (ingredients and even names) . . . Or else they will just copy from US. . . Then we will pretend that a lot of innovative stuff is going on in India. Only innovation I've seen is partly in fintech and that's because the market or RBI is forcing something.
