Is product management as career reallyworth the hype?
I am reading very often that the craze around product management is too much and this career is not worth the hype. Adding on to that it has huge supply of PMs and many of PMs are underpaid. Is it true?

Not worth the hype. But if you know the job, you can create a very large impact. But sadly not many PMs out there know Product Management. And most importantly, not many companies know about why they are hiring PMs.

I was about to make same point. Very sensible point to ponder.

True. Most companies see PMs as a magic pill

So. See first of all its certainly not any chu**ya mini ceo job or bs like that.
Product Manager brings in new ideas and builds roadmap for future. That's a good job description, but the reality is such a description doesn't have or need too many people. So atleast in the firm I work with 70% of PMs are waste. And especially they are not skilled in any core capabilities of that product they are just dumb people in cool outfit.
It's majorly a pool of non skilled graduates (people who don't want to go in their core subject of engg or people that don't want learn software engineering either) wanting a shot at entering the tech industry just for the sake of looking cool. Better learn some coding and become a good developer of data analyst, or engineer or data scientist (MLE).
Product management might come in later

Wow so much of vitriol, itni Kyu Jai rhi hai bhai ๐๐
Also would love to know about your sample space basis which you have discredited the entire PM community.
Let me burst your bubble:
I was a developer for 3 years
Then became a business analyst
Did the pre-sales
Took up UX project outside of work
Then moved into product management.

Burst your own bubble. Especially if you think u r mini ceo. ๐คฃ
You should come & see how fresher engineers kick PMs around. Point is same as I have always made, PMs are actually no PMs when they are building tech products and don't have a tech background.
The background you have mentioned (if true which I somehow doubt) is the right background for PMs. But many drooling kids are now mini ceos ๐
Craze - Yes, reason can be as simple as PM roles give more opportunities (career/monetary). Many non-tech folks are able to join mainstream tech through the PM gateway only. Remember, anyone can do tech, itโs just some tech bros who want to build high walls with their egos.
Worth the hype - It all depends on individuals situation. If youโre making good money and have skills in other areas, why you wanna leave that? PMing is good and worth if you can deal with ambiguity & communicate effectively.
Supply & Compensation - These supply, demand issues are not the same if you see at various levels of the pyramid. Ask any PM leader, how easy/difficult it is to hire in this market.

Please either try connecting with seniors or reading up online elsewhere. Grapevine is not the platform for this lol
