But the first moment I want to put myself and my career first and all I hear is that I'm too young to think about these things.

Does anyone feel hopeless? It’s a never ending cycle of chasing money and the sad part is I am not even making anything close to my peers with same years of experience.  I am just disappointed, my direct manager refuses to promote me even after I have consistently told him that I want to be PM from the very start and followed pursuit for projects to highlight my skills.  Yet he continues to say do the job without the money, you don’t really need the title. I understand that this is the way forward for coelevating and collaborating but it professionally hurts me if I don’t have the title.

I have highlighted the same to my manager and skip level, but always getting answer like it is new product, market situation is no good, we believe in lean structure etc.

I'm feeling really stuck and frustrated at work lately. Despite putting in my best efforts and consistently performing well, it seems like my manager is feeling threatened by my progress. He’s been rejecting my ideas and work without even reviewing them, and calling me out in meetings for not completing non-priority tasks. The environment has become really toxic and it's taking a toll on me. Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you handle it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Feeling frustrated at work

I have been employed at a service-based company for the past 2.6 years. Recently, I have been assigned to a new project with a different team. However, my manager has been quite demanding and insistent on my physical presence in the office. Additionally, they expect me to participate in video calls for every meeting and ask detailed questions about my work, often focusing on minor details. Unfortunately, the tasks I am currently working on no longer bring me excitement. Moreover, my manager's authoritative behavior is not something I appreciate. I am starting to wonder if I am experiencing burnout, as I have never encountered these issues before. Is this a normal situation, or should I consider seeking a new opportunity? Other than these work-related challenges, everything else seems to be going well.

Life has 3 currencies - money, time, energy. I'm running short on the last two.

I've done enough grinding in my career so far (10+ yrs). Have a family and personal issues to take care of. Whatever limited leisure time i get is spent on unwinding for the sake of my sanity, but beyond that I'm unable to devote time or energy to my family, or on self care, or any of the hundred other non-work priorities.

I'm done working 12 hr days and working on weekends as well, with a lurking anxiety of what could go wrong at the office, and how my career is shaping up. I've kinda accepted that i might not hit senior management roles anytime soon, but as long as I'm able to make a good life away from work as well, I'm not really worried about it. However, that's not also happening in the current scheme of things.

Hence, need to get into a chill company that affords me time and energy. I understand money might be not as grand. I've heard of American Express being one such place. Any other recommendations?

Growth Manager

Everyone is jumping for higher salary because they're supposed to - as potentially expenses increases over time over an individual's life cycle. 

I was new to my role , had some experience already, and now 2.5 years later I'm an expert in this role ...and I'm feeling the pressure of "switching" for better pay and learning and growth because otherwise I'm stagnated in this role in this company. 

My CTC right now was once upon a time my aspiration but now it's on the lower average side for my years of experience. 

But wasn't the point of work to find a place where you can work for a long long time and make decent money - I like the role , the bosses , the flexibility etc. But the organization size is small and there genuinely isn't much steep growth path ahead. 

I am ambitious and I would like a bigger role in a different company at some point of time in my life but right now everything is settled here and is fine...except the learning / growth/ salary is now stagnated for the next ~12 months or so. 

I'm confused about staying or switching.

I was being paid less by the company. But I continued as it allowed some personal time and I was expecting senior positions. However, the company has appointed someone(was close to top.mgmt) as my head and my chances of senior roles are bleak now. 
Should I keep playing the chess/politics or just lookout for something else? 
ps- my seniors have left the company and I am not finding any sponsor/godfather who can put forward my case.

Fellow engineers, as the title suggests, here is some brief : my L1 has the same exp as me in terms of total yoe, just that he is an older employee of my current company, writes shitty code, is an average engineer, same with L2, average engineer, even worse manager, and I am kind of stuck beneath them and I think my growth and learning is stagnated now.

I do understand that switching the job is one way, but I gotta survive meanwhile.

I just had a one on one with my L2, it brought out no outcome.

How do you deal with incompetent managers ?

I am working as a Software Engineer and aspiring to get promotion to Senior Software Engineer.
My manager who use to support me went on a sabbatical, now my team is getting changed for second time in 3 months and the team I was working in from 1 year and wanting to be Team Lead of is sidelining me as I will be moving to new team now. It’s getting tough for me to take lead of anything and people around are not supportive of me being Team Lead even after knowing I am capable of it.. What should I di, should I just keep head down and wait for manager to return and rant to him or just keep poking everyone and snatch ky rights of Team Lead and stay in same team and refuse to change team

What to do when getting sidelined as an SSE?

Remember I’d read this quote when I was just starting out with my work life. Had noted it down and just chanced upon it again.

I know it’s a bit extreme as a thought. As years go by, I’ve started believing in this much lesser. I would give anything for my first company to succeed. That’s the psyche a lot of us enter our first jobs with. Don’t remember but I think this is why I’d noted down the quote. 

One toxic manager and one startup that is crooked later, you get derailed. You think you need to value your work lesser in the context of the larger life.

But it doesn’t give me happiness. I think I’m too much of a Type A, to ever be in a place where I feel I’m not doing enough of what I want to do, with my career.

Life can be embraced through work. It just doesn’t need to stop within the confines of your job and company. I’ll try to be more like the fresher me.

Embracing life through work

Working as an SDE2 right now. Got promoted recently. Motivation to work is at an all-time low. Feels like I am stuck in a rat race. Is this normal? I see senior engineers in my team and frankly, I don't want to end up like them in the next few years. Immense respect for their skills and what they bring to the table, but I don't see myself doing that. I have a few options to consider:

Bucket 1
Keep grinding at my current role
Decent growth (career and money)
Stable life, certainity
Low Risk, Moderate Reward

Bucket 2
Coast at current role
Look for a switch (preferably outside India)
Make a lot of money
Basically, follow this and keep climbing the ladder
Boring AF

Bucket 1 and Bucket 2 can probably be merged, keeping them separate as it is very different in reality.

Bucket 3 (The Interesting Bucket)
Coast at current role
Build micro-SaaS solutions, contribute to open source, build problem solving attitude
Startup someday
Could result in slow growth, might end up wasting a few years.

The real constraint? I have to support a family. All expenses. We have no other income source at this point. Taking any risk with income is a big deal for me.

Just ranting here. I am not expecting a clear pick. Just looking for more opinions on what I am thinking, and maybe understand if I am overthinking.

What should I do next?

I am a regular IT guy, working as an SDE in a product-based company, making around 12 LPA with 2.5YOE and a background from a named Tier 1 (or Tier 2, depending on your perspective) private college.
I am currently on a job hunt and max could leverage up to a 50% hike!

I'm noticing many folks with base salaries ranging from 20 LPA - 25 LPA and overall CTCs in the range of 35 LPA - 40 LPA with the same 2-3 years of experience!

I'm happy for them, but I'm wondering why I'm struggling to reach those levels despite my efforts. Have overall salary ranges increased? Am I stuck in the same salary bracket? It's frustrating and makes me feel inadequate at this stage of my career.

Some might say that salary isn't everything, but personally, I have certain commitments that require a better-paying job. However, whenever I pursue opportunities, they seem just out of reach.

Feeling dumb about myself!

I have been one of the lucky ones to have made a switch to a new company just before the layoff season began. I had multiple offers at the time, but ultimately chose one where I was getting to build something from scratch in a large organization at my current designation and was also getting a good hike (20%). The offers I dropped had a better title with a team to manage. However, the options were to either take a pay cut to join a Series A company or a large organization with a known bad work culture.

Off late, I'm feeling a little frustrated with the new job. I feel like I won't get chance to move to a better title for atleast a year. Since the recession period has kicked in, the new team needs to show results in order to get a promotion and the targets are quite steep for that. 

There is some learning that I have while building this product and that is definitely a motivation, but also feel I'm missed out an opportunity to move to next level in career. 

On one hand, I feel like I should have taken the pay cut to join the series A startup. On the other hand, I also feel that I should be happy that I'm getting comfortably more pay at a time where folks are having poor appraisals, pay cuts or even getting laid off.

Given a choice between title and money what would you choose?

Feeling lost in my current role

Hi all

I am currently working as a business analyst for about 6 months now. Earlier was in a back end development team but was underperforming as could not really figure out what to do. I don’t like coding. The current role suits me but I don’t know if it has a good future.

Current role - Analyse old product (old code) (understand the complete functionality)
Suggest enhancements if asked for by the client.
Give demos to on-site people/developers
Test the modernised version of the product (started very recently. Called “functional testing”)

Can I switch to a different company with a good jump in pay in future? I feel like the work I do is not really considered worthy and hence there is no growth in this field. 

Please suggest how to move forward. Would like to work for another year or two and then go for an MBA abroad.

Future seems bleak

I am a senior manager in a software company, in my 40s , in the cloud operations domain. I have no post grad ,no certs , and playing a people leader role, no technical knowledge (i am technically inclined but have not made learning tech my priority),  I feel like I am not employable if I get fired. So I am a fresher who joined this decent company where they pay me a decent salary. I got allotted to a project in place of an Senior Swe.  It's been 2 months and I have been given tickets regarding features requests . The work is not easy at all. The team consists of 5 people where there are only 2 developers me and my manager. He is mostly busy so he just provides me an overview about the code base which is 30 years old . The languages are C, C++ and C#. I have been working on this feature request for the past 3 weeks and the pressure is immense. I am feeling so terrible that I am not able to deliver. I just don't like this feeling. I try and try and try but some things are just way above my expertise. I have always been good at coding but to contribute to a real world project is really tough. It's also quite frustrating as at every step you have to deal with multiple problems. My manager is a good guy overall but today he told me that I really need to amp up my game. And deliver. I just don't like to be mediocre but I am just stuck at this point. Am I overthinking? Or me feeling this way is normal. I just want suggestions from different people of this sub!!
