 My plan was to move to India after becoming a PM in Japan but I also want to experience how PMs/management in India is (I am aware that it differs from an organisation to another) so that I can grow better.

I am currently an SDE3 working in Japan, in the past 6 months I have moved from SDE1 to 3. I am planning on moving back to India in the next year, can someone list their job roles as an SDE2 or SDE3. I personally think that there is a big gap of skills between the engineers working in these 2 countries (Indian engineers are better in terms of skills whereas Japanese are really organised). So I want to know where I lack so that I can prepare accordingly.

I currently holds the position of Software Development Engineer SDE 2 in Amazon India and if I transitions to Amazon Seattle, I would again assume the role of SD Two. I am bit unsure whether this move would be beneficial for me. Should we opt for staying in India as an SDE 2 or relocating to Seattle as an SD?

Hi folks,
I recently got laid off from a startup where 50% of the engineering team was let go. I was working as an SDE and during a restructuring, my role was changed to SDE-2 without any increase in pay or responsibilities. I have a total of 2.5 years of experience. In my first company (where I worked for a year), there weren't many projects, so I didn't have the opportunity to learn or code much. However, in my second company, I primarily worked on the backend using Go, Django, Kafka, MongoDB, & PostgreSQL.
I realize that although I gained exposure in my second job, I didn't delve deeply into the technologies. I mainly focused on completing business tasks quickly, learning new things just to finish the task at hand, without solidifying my understanding afterward.
My experience seems suitable for an SDE-2 role, but I'm unsure if I can perform the role with complete honesty and may struggle. Some friends in similar situations reassure me that this struggle is common in SDE-2 roles. However, I feel I might be better off starting again as an SDE-1, focusing on my weak areas, and aiming for a promotion later. There are very few SDE-1 job openings currently.
I am actively interviewing for SDE-2, and not able to clear system design interviews. Tbh, I feel very humiliated as when I am not able to answer their questions it feels like I am wasting their time or they would be thinking: Oh this guy has been working for so long and doesn't even know anything.

Now I get it why people think Indian Software engineers are not that good in comparison to other countries' devs: the reason is people like me. 
This realization burdens me with guilt, occupying my thoughts constantly. However, I am confident that I can crack SDE-1 easily. I have good DSA & good enough LLD, &HLD skills for SDE1. I am looking for companies who can match my prev Salary: 22 L, 2 Bonus.
Can u help how to navigate this career situation effectively without increasing my guilt or feeling constantly humiliated?

Laid Off | Stuck Now | Too Anxious | Please guide

First work on the feeling of humiliation and self worthlessness. Don't ignore this, I've done it and it's one of my biggest regret. Working on this will feel a waste of time initially given job search is highest priority, I assure you your future self would thank you.  
  
 Now you are clearly very self aware, most incompetent people don't even know their shortcomings. And you know what, many comparatively incompetent people are making much more money, having much less self doubt and just living more - it's like being more self aware is a curse.  
  
 How do you get out of this curse? It's a slow process. Write down the things that make you feel that way, come up with an an action plan on what you could do to reduce that - clear goals and actions always relive anxiety. Writing things down is extremely important, keep coming back to it whenever you feel the same way, eventually you would reason your way out of this. Most of the time you are in a loop, living in guilt and self doubt for the same reasons over and over. Documentation of these feelings over time will make it look so silly, how could the same problem give you so much mental pain again and again.  
  
 You will do just fine career wise. With a few more years of experience, I can guarantee you will evolve over time, the problems giving you so much mental pain would seem very trivial then - that if you are able to resolve these feelings - otherwise it's a hell I wouldn't want for my worst enemies.  
  
 Some questions to ponder over -  
 1. Can you do the job search while being just a little gentle on yourself? 
 2. Does failure mean you have no worth? Can you fail more gracefully?  
 3. Does 2.5 years of mistakes(even if it see that way) mean you can't do amazing things in coming years? 
 4. Above all, does feelings of humiliation and worthlessness help you in any way? If nothing else changes, wouldn't it be better to just be a little gentler on yourself? 
  
 Take care, you don't have a career problem, a mental health one instead

Razorpay probably has the most overrated engineering culture from the outsider's perspective. Everytime on Twitter there's some npc telling how Razorpay is a dream place to work at or how Razorpay engineering is the holy grail.
From inside it's hilarious that someone could even think of those things. There's no learning path, especially in payments business unit for engineers who are forever stuck in ad hoc tasks. There's no long term plan, no roadmap, just PM and EMs shoving down and hocs.
Even in terms of learning from peers, there are so few charters where someone works with a lead, mostly it's just slogging it out alone in an ad hoc or some bug fix.
It's almost always an eternal cycle of never working in impactful projects -> never get assigned one, because there are so few -> get average reviews -> again being asked to work on "impactful projects".
 If anyone is under 3/4 yoe they should stay away from razorpay for their careers sake.

How the current SDE1 and SDE2 will get accomodated in IT industry in future. Hear me out. Currently lets say there is a team of 10 members in one of the IT company. Lets say 4 are sde1, 4 are sde2, 1 is sde3, 1 is teamLead. Now in future since higher positions are very less, how these 4 sde1 and 4 sde2 will get accomodated. In past years, for those who are currently at manager+ positions, when they were sde1/sde2, at that time number was low, so they got accomodated easily in growing IT demand. But now it seems there are already too many IT companies, seems very low probability that count of IT employees in total of India will even increase by 10-20% in next 5 years. Every year lakhs of IT engineers are also getting graduated. They can get that sde1 positions, but what about current sde1 and sde2 ? Do we need to find another career ?

Whoever comments, please explain in detail your thoughts. Need some discussions to decide future career path.

Hi everyone, I am currently working as SDE. I do my work very well and i receive accolades from manager and my team members as well. But whenever i discuss my growth ideas with manager, i always receive same feedback i.e. i need to know about the other peoples are working on which task and i need to provide feedback in design discussion call. I am bit confused. I know on very high level about the task but not very much context. And i always provides my pov in design discussion if i am aware of that particular thing. My of our team member's work doesn't overlap with each other. In that case for me it is very hard to share my pov as i don't have more context. Any suggestions how can i overcome two above problems. I have seen from the place I work at that growth (in terms of monetory benefits and opportunities) is much better for SDE folks than Data Science people.

1. For freshers it's easy to learn to write css and get complete responsibility of a task henceforth on completion getting more recognition and praise than in Data Science. Good tasks are almost never given directly to freshers due to steep learning curve in the field hence leading to lower growth rate.

2. SDE folks generally have tasks divided into sprints which make them a lot more easily trackable and appreciable at reviews, whereas in DS at least at the place I have worked tasks are given haphazardly and almost never account to much while reviews.

3. Another observation is that folks who have worked for about 3-4 years in SDE profiles have now become team leads whereas DS folks have not been promoted at the same pace 

Looking at all this, in my opinion data science folks are treated as second class citizens as compared to sde folks.

All this might not be true for all the firms, and I want to know if anyone else has some views on this.
