 If you are 50+ LPA in a Decacorn, any appraisal is a positive.

Appraisal Season '24: What was your last salary and what is your current salary?

IIT grad here building a venture backed startup. I think 99% of folks here believe that venture backed founders are super entitled and in a much "cosier" position than employees

Just sharing a few facts about our journey so far if it helps anyone improve their perspectives-

1) Paying ourselves 33% of our campus salary & 60% of what we are paying to our employees (Talking about Pure Base Salary here, not including ESOPs)

2) Insane stress - You basically have to raise money to build (esp if its deeptech because of the high fixed costs) and there are predefined metrics you have to always chase, sometimes just beyond yourselves. 

Your product will be copied if it's good because well, they always have more money than you. You work 7 days a week for insane hours, chasing metrics required to be "afloat" 

3) 99% of venture backed startups result in 0 liquidity gain for founders. So basically in all likeliness, everything is for a net negative return compared to if we took the campus job

So, when you wholeheartedly bash founders as if they are sitting On a goldmine while you are toiling for THEIR gold Treasure, just understand that more likely than not, there is not really any gold but rather an irrational hope they are clinging to

Also, Yes-we pay above market to our employees (100% hike for the last one) but the truth is some startups just Can't afford it. And ironically, there is a much higher looking down on these startups with meagurely paid founders rather than giants like Tech Mahindra paying peanuts to their employees while having a 1000% salary hike for the executives. 

Yeah, most startups need to do better but please appreciate if someone is atleast trying to do better because trust me, it's INSANELY HARD.. 

The number of posts I see about Flipkart making hundreds millionaires is way too less than the ones I see about pinpointing at every single mistake early stage startups do & I just wanted to express my opinion on it

I recently interviewed at an MNC and my interviews went great. They also gave a case study.
At the time of final negotiation for salary, i asked for standard 40-45% hike. However they took some time and came back with an offer of almost 95%-100% and literally more than that if i include yearly fixed bonus component.

This was a big surprise to me, and they states that we have done this taking care of pay parity, etc.

I am very happy, 
However, i want to know is this common or happened with anyone else?
Are there such good companies, people and HRs...

Anyone having any thoughts on this?

What's the average annual hike at your org ? I know it depends on performance and all, but still there's gotta be range. Asking from a dev standpoint, but would like to know others as well. At my company, it's around 10-15 %(mid size company, not a startup).

Lot of Developers are leaving the company (specially frontend) because of low salaries, limited scope of work and Return to office policy. 
Company is silently creating an atmosphere where developers are leaving on their own. 

Company is also not planning to provide any good pay raise in the upcoming appraisals.

I joined this mid level product cum service based company 3.5 years back and got around 5 increments with average of 40% hike each time.

This year they have increased by just 5% and also they promised they won't layoff any current employees which is a good sign.

Is this expected seeing the current scenario around IT world?

Got a salary hike of 5%. Is this expected in the current layoffs going on?

Almost 50% of the org got no increments
People with "exceeds" rating got single digit increments
Only promotion cases have got early to mid double digit increments
Promotions have been significantly fewer this time, max people have been told to hold off their expectations of promotions for another year

The reasons cited were economic slowdown, other companies like Microsoft, Flipkart, swiggy, Amazon doing the same and cost cutting. I think things are getting toxic and the majority of employees have been left disappointed.

It's been 4 years since covid started and all of us went into the first lockdown (24 March 2020). I just thought of this while making another post, and this has actually taken me aback. It was such a crazy time, and now it's just long gone. 

- We got a lot of time to be home, to be around loved ones, most of us are privileged and hence Covid wasn't bad at all. We were mostly making Dalgona Coffee, sourdough bread, playing PUBG, watching movies, etc. 

- A lot of us also lost loved ones. It was really brutal for those who did. And it was always scary for the rest of us. 

- Most of us who have been in tech saw our salaries climb the fastest. The absolute peak job market, best hikes, the world was very positive in that sense - not as much work and enough pay to enjoy 

- The biggest thing I've noticed: Covid got me hooked to Instagram/YT Shorts/and other social media. I feel like I used to be more aware and awake before covid. Somehow, a lot of exposure to social media/content etc. has made me just very zoned out in life. I think a lot of us have a much shorter attention span. 

IDK if this is true, but certainly feels like it is true. 

Just penning this down because I'm genuinely tripping how long it's been.

4 years since Covid started. What are your memories from that time? How have you evolved since?

Pre & Post Covid me are different person.  
 I don't know that guy now. And for some reason it looks like a decade has passed by yet the lockdown announcement on news just rings like as if it was yesterday. "bhaiyo beheno ..." 
    
 What I miss was empty roads. Blue skies of Delhi and pin-drop silence 24/7. Only rustling leaves and birds. For a moment the world looked at peace.  The sun was fantastic back then.  
  
 I am fortunate to be at this end of spectrum as others have disastrous circumstances. One thing I'm noticing since then. The time seems to be running abnormally fast now.  
 Like zipp! 3 months of 2024 gone.

Perfios recently received a funding of 230 million dollars. For the employees who didn't have ESOPs or benefit from the ESOPs, would there be a good salary hike associated here?

While the starting salaries and salaries at <10 yoe have really sky rocketed and this is good for the ecosystem, wanted to understand what happens to salaries in tech/product post 15 yoe+. 

I’m curious about this especially because it doesn’t tie up with income tax data. Assuming seniors leaders in tech and product would be making 1 cr+ easily and most of these would have formal streams of income that can’t be hidden easily, income tax department reports only around 1.3 lakh individuals (2 year old data though) who had taxable income above 1 cr. Even if the number has risen to 2 lakhs now, it still doesn’t tie back to the stories here of many people making above 1 cr.

Is the income tax data wrong or are the salaries plateauing at around 80-90L or have people found some amazing ways of saving tax. Just curious!

I'm working at payU payment from 2 years and from last two years they are giving the increments in single digit, is the market is bad ? Last year I got 4% increment I was informed by my manager that company is not doing good same has happened this year again I got only 4% incriment. In my team I have seen people are getting 8-10% also and in other team few have got 12% also, however I feel even 12% is the highest still it seems too low. is this is happening everywhere or it's just payU?

Between 2020 and 2022, investors pumped billions of dollars into startups whose founders and leaders offered up the mythical “hypergrowth” narrative.  Who exactly is recognising overvalued startups as a problem? Most are still trying to run the grift and were only hampered by interest rates lowering their runway. You can see how many are opening AI startups that have nothing to do with AI whatsoever, not to mention the number of Crypto / Web3 companies in our country. 
  
 Executive pay has always been the problem, take a look at any graph showing the skyrocketing ratio of Executive:Employee salary ratio, and for terrible decision making and management as a trend.
