Should I get an MBA?
My profile:
- in CS from Tier2
- 7 years of experience as Software engineer
- Worked in startups, bigtech
- TC ~ 90L
I am good at my job, well respected among peers, and have consistently performed above expectations, but it feels like something is missing. Even after making decent money, I am not satisfied with what I’m doing in my life, unable to see how it will all add up in the long run. Anyone else feels the same?
I’m contemplating hard what I should really be doing with my life. The ultimate goal is to start something of my own - but due to lack of ideas (and maybe intelligence, drive?), I’m looking at what options do I have with my career.
Evaluating getting an MBA from top Indian/US B-schools.
I think it will help me ‘restart’ afresh, help me make good connections, gain new perspective.
However, I’m an introverted person, so its a big risk if I would really fit in into the MBA track. Would also mean leaving a 1 cr/year job on the table.
Career wise, it is a good move? Would you recommend?

You won't make anywhere close to your current TC if you do an MBA from any indian B-school
+ you miss out on 1/2 years of your salary, and incur the huge cost.
If you do decide on going for an MBA, try abroad

Even after MBA also you'll feel that something is missing.
And the salary will be lesser than what you are getting right now. So better spend the money on yourself, go on trips, enjoy on weekends, meet friends and family, go to the gym. Gradually, you'll start feeling good about everything. Work life is not everything.
And since you are in a good rapport with the team, be grateful, not every job will be like that.
Enjoy what you have😊
No please don't pursue an MBA. You are already on the way to achieving wealth security. The next 2-3 years are going to be brutal as far as the job market goes.
If you're unsatisfied with your job, try to explore adjacent fields. If that's not interesting, explore subjects taught in B Schools like Marketing, Strategy, and Data Analytics by pursuing certifications.
Once you explore these subjects you'll be able to exploit by uniquely combining your interests with your skill. But don't waste your time getting a general MBA, that degree won't matter unless you get into the Top 5 B-schools.
They are expensive and even if you recover the fees, you won't be able to get back the time and the associated costs you spent on acquiring the degrees.

Mba not helpful if you want to remain in a tech role.
ROI wise it won't make sense
Unless you move to the US or somewhere else
Are you done with being a dev, and want to be on the business side of things? Then consider it. Even if you lose out on the money, you will regret not shifting now.
Career is a long run game, if you do something you don't like, it'll hurt at some point
What weed are you smoking bro? Seems too low quality got someone earning almost 1cr in india

Usually I would say not everything is greener on the other side to most people who are trying for an MBA. But you seem to have good enough experience under the belt and work at Microsoft no less so I have to assume that you do know a lot about the technical aspects of the software industry.
Getting an MBA should be something you should consider only if you feel that the technical aspects of your career aren't something that you want to pursue long term. And even if that is the vase, there are many ways to pivot to a managerial based role at the job itself. You just need to be open about it. But if getting an MBA is a decision you are making because you are feeling unsatisfied with life in general, then I would suggest trying to understand the root cause of it rather than putting an MBA band aid. Maybe it could be something much more emotional at play than career progression and often talking it out with someone usually would give some enlightenment. Some would suggest seeking therapy but this could be just as simple as just being honest about yourself on what you want with life. I hope you figure things out soon.

None of the responders themselves seem to have an MBA. The worth is not in the education - you could get that anywhere - it's in the network and learning you build with peers. Speak to people who have gone to a Tier 1 Bschool (HBS, Wharton, GSB, etc) and they'll give you a very different perspective than 9 - 5 ers on GV.
PS: on my way to 2+2 with HBS

Bhai bahut achhi salary h something is missing will always be there koi bh MBA itna package nh degi
You said something is missing, definitely you won't get doing MBA. Since you are so good at work and earning well. Do investment for few years in a such a way that in next 5-10 years you can retire and be with people whom you love.
Most importantly your retirement should help you in doing what you want, with people you want, as long as you want.

Having 3 yoe, but in the exact same boat as you. Just feel like I don't like pursuing this anymore
Do an online MBA from a tier 1 b school and work your way to get into engineering leadership. This is the only way forward - anything else is just going back.
I think what is missing is - How you would transition from an individual contributer to a people manager who leads a team of people at higher level
An MBA might be the answer for the transition, but you might not be what the companies are looking for when they reach out for placements.
If you have the peers and connections to secure a job post MBA to taken you to the next level then you should go for it (Try talking about this with your boss or even your boss's boss)
