Suggest me how to track developers productive time.
I started a new it company. And I have developers to design and develop websites. But I think employees are making us fool with a timeline they take too much time for small small tasks and said this one was complicated. And I don't have any coding knowledge so please suggest me how to handle this situation and how to track their time. (Don't have too much budget for purchasing any too I have a thumbprint attendance system.)
Know what's a realistic estimate or hire someone who knows. Real dev work requires lots of things, like free time to think, it's not just coding.
Tracking time for dev work is the stupidest thing. There's a reason only sweatshops do it and not the top companies.
No need to track time, it will just make the environment toxic. Just hire a technical guy with ideally 5+ yrs experience, whose responsibility will be 50% individual contribution and 50% monitoring those technical estimates and advising you on that.
not to mention the edge cases and any unexpected blockers which might come up when delving into details of that feature development.
Hire someone who’s not related to that org. The person you hire should be technically apt and hopefully someone who has experience of around 10+ years.
They should be very comfortable with the technology and also take time to understand your code base.
And make them act as a tech lead.
This works well for you.
I did similar role for a startup during covid. Obviously it’s a part time gig. But you get the drift.
Also no point in trying to come up with ways to track them. If done properly you don’t have to worry at all cuz they would be answering to this tech lead
