Am I the only one who is thinking that companies simply want to get the work done using these interns and avoiding hiring full time employees? Signs of not to good days.

Also winter internships were not these common or were they? 🫤

I'll go first. I got a call for an APM role from one of the companies which did sound pretty sketchy and the recruiter was started bullying me into answering questions, when I asked to know more about the role. The recruiter was extremely unprofessional, and obviously the conversation was nowhere great. They however, did go ahead and sent me the JD and other links, etc to fill in and apply for the job. Mind you, I hadn't applied for the job. 🥲
It just was a pretty sour conversation which had left me in an uncertain situation. Any similar experiences?

Weird recruiter experiences

Asked for my expected CTC. I answered and they weren't happy with it. Said they could only give at 40% increment of current CTC and then asked for my current CTC. After hearing my current CTC they said I shouldn't be earning this much and that I was obviously making it up. Then asked to send over my salary payslip which I refused. Basically the HR started being extremely rude at this point stating that I was being unprofessional. I asked their salary budget for the role which they refused to answer. Then I asked if they were willing to hire me for a lower CTC which she instantly agreed and said she knew I was reasonable and I shouldn't have lied about my CTC. I then said good luck finding a candidate for that amount and hung up.

I'm starting a new company and am assembling a team, in all my previous startups had like 7 people working but now everyone is settled and few have retired coz made too much from the exits so back to assembling a new team :p

As in all my previous startups I paid an average of 40Lpa an 2-3% ESOPs to all the early team they made insane wealth. But now I'm thinking of going lower and meet the realities of the market rather than paying higher why not paying the market rate?

I have been taking multiple interviews and experienced this people consider higher salaries to be a lie they want to earn dirt-cheap salaries and don't trust themselves with what they deserve and in the end ended up mocking me. One of the senior people that I interviewed thought 3lakhs per month was very high no-one pays that much. Same goes for an intern who I decided to pay 1lakh per month thought it's not possible and ghosted me thinking I'm scamming him ( his job was to meet high profile people make connection with different founders by going to parties and events regularly )!

My new startup is not in crypto but in something unique!

What do you'll think should I pay people less as that's what they think they deserve?

Initially I was given a 6 month intern + full time offer, all went well, but in the last month this company is revoking full time offers of some interns  and extending the intern offer to 3-4 months. What should I do in this case ? I am literally scared right now?

The next time, i get asked from a recruiter if I have an offer in hand, I want to say yes. Is there a way for them to verify if there's an offer or not other than asking you to send a copy of it ?

Recently set out to hire interns and had a really strange experience

Went through about 170 CVs. Most were shabbily formatted - which is okay, I understand most people aren’t that serious in college.

But then after shortlisting and setting up interviews:
- Multiple kids just did not show up for the interview. They did not even write a mail excusing themselves. Or reply to any mail from me about them missing the call.

- Some of them literally turned up for the call on their phone. They’re mostly well to do, and definitely have laptops. But just casual. 

- This reduced my selection pool to literally 8-9 interns from 180. Of these too, generally saw most of them had too much overconfidence and arrogance about them. Barely went into the depth of the answers, and would over-portray their contribution in past projects/internships, without being able to explain what they really did

I am genuinely shocked and taken aback. These were all Tier 1 college kids, and I just did not expect it to be so bad. A shock for me, and a future shock for many of these kids when they get into the workforce!

I recently interviewed at an MNC and my interviews went great. They also gave a case study.
At the time of final negotiation for salary, i asked for standard 40-45% hike. However they took some time and came back with an offer of almost 95%-100% and literally more than that if i include yearly fixed bonus component.

This was a big surprise to me, and they states that we have done this taking care of pay parity, etc.

I am very happy, 
However, i want to know is this common or happened with anyone else?
Are there such good companies, people and HRs...

Anyone having any thoughts on this?

Has this happened with anyone where you are offered more salary than what you asked for?

I was laid off in February. Finally after 2.5 months of boring interviews and life, landed a job. Today was Day 1. 
I was outside India for a while doing crazy stuffs. I returned in June and then started applying. Here is the summary. 
1. Lots of applicants in the job market. Every job would attract 1000s of applicants 
2. Most jobs require high experience - 5+ 
3. Applying and finding companies who are hiring is tough. 
4. Emailed everyone in network, took referrals from all friends, took referrals from LinkedIn (very low response), Applied on instahyre, Wrote to startup founders, applied Wellfound, Workday(worst of all), Naukri 
5. Startups are the worst - gave petty assignments and ghosted after getting solution. Had to follow up multiple times but to no avail. They ate my whole 1 month
6. Some interviews were different - in one I had to code in python very fast. That's it. Wasn't selected as I was looking up for syntax on internet. 
7. Overall it was a very boring and tiring process. I somehow maintained my sanity.

So, I joined a startup as a content writing intern.  the timings were shitty (10hrs Mon-Sat)  but it was good. I had already told them my situation that I do have classes for 2hrs I need to attend but otherwise I'm free (distance learning hai). I also need to go twice a month to centres for assignment submission  or queries.

But, the worst part is that no one was giving me feedback and I was still getting to know how things work on my own. However, after 20 days, they terminated my contract saying I wasn't up to mark and without any warnings or feedback. I was so flabbergasted that I couldn't voice my opinion. 

Now, I have gotten.internship opportunities from 2 startups. I don't know if this is how startup works and I don't want to get so stressed about it. Is this how startup environments are?

P.S. : That was my first experience working with a Startup

This was my pathetic interview experience with Acceldata india with a very unprofessional and lying recruiter. This story has a satisfying ending.

I attended 6 rounds of interviews in 1 month and completed a take home assignment. I cleared all the rounds and even had a manager discussion about my onboarding. All good so far. 

Few days later the recruiter called back and said we need one more round (8th round) with the director who sits in US office. I said Ok and he scheduled this call on a Friday 10pm at night. 

At 9:55pm I tried to join the meeting link he sent but the link was not working. I tried in different browsers, different laptop, different internet connection. No luck. 

So I reached out to recruiter on mobile and he doesn't pick up. I know he's available because he was on call with someone else. I even tried reaching him via a different phone number but still no luck. Imagine the anxiety and panic I had to go through since I felt that it was my fault. 

On, next day he casually calls me in the morning to say that "Sorry I tried calling you 2 days ago but your mobile was unreachable (which is a plain lie). He says he cancelled the meeting because he found another candidate with lower salary.

That's fine, and I don't give a damn at this point. But I asked why didn't he send meeting cancelled email so I didn't have to panic on a friday late night. He casually says "Sorry about that". That's the last I hear of him. No response after that. 

All this after going through 8 rounds of interviews and a take home assignment. All because this a--hole recruiter lied to my face and couldn't send a simple email. 

Funny thing is: Another recruiter reached out to me 3 months later for the same role. Apparently the candidate they hired instead of me backed out at the last miniute. 🤣

If you get a chance to interview at AccelData, trust me, please don't waste your time. The company and the recruiting practises are not worth your time, even if you are jobless.

Has anyone refused to reveal their current salary during interviews? I read somewhere that it's illegal for HRs to ask for current compensation.

I interviewed for a company called tooljet, cleared all the rounds.

During the negotiation with HR, in the later stages of negotiation I had asked few questions like
1. Is there any Esops(no)
2. Appraisal cycle(it's a startup, depends on performance)
3. Promotion possibility(it's a startup so depends on the performance)
4. Performance bonus(it's a startup depends on performance) no range given
5. Medical insurance ( it's a startup so no)
6. Probation period(3 months)
7. Leave policy(21 days yearly, can't take more than 3 days consecutively) the head of product and tech lead said it will be unlimited
8. Public holidays(national holidays yes + 1 day for diwali) so 5-6 days I'm assuming 
9. Work from home expenses if any?(no)
10. Working hours(10-7, it's a startup so you might have to work long hours)
11. Working days( 5 days)
12. Notice period( 1 month)
13. Joining date(tomorrow) lol, I asked her to defer it by a week

1st call was regarding my expectations ( she said she will give me 30-35% increment on previous)
2nd call was about her offer(gave me 23%)
3rd call was regarding all these questions
4th call I accepted asked her to defer it by a week
5th call she said no, saying you asked a lot of questions, we want someone who can focus on the growth of our startup and not worry about these things.
I never got a chance to negotiate, she never accepted or even bothered to listen to any of my requests. I asked her to increase it by 30% and she didn't even bother to listen and refused it. Her entire attitude was , take it or leave it.
She said she can't negotiate each and every day,and I barely got a chance to even negotiate.
Did I say anything wrong or is the HR stupid?

TLDR;

Did B.Tech in ECE from a tier 3 college. In college, explored different avenues and finally found deep learning and computer vision to be the most interesting. Did lots of projects, research paper etc. However, being from a tier 3 college, making a career in this domain wasn’t easy. Graduated in 2020, joined a startup as an intern with a stipend of 35k per month. 6 months later, the internship didn’t convert, although I worked really hard and my manager liked my work.
Joined another startup with a salary of 6.5LPA. Although I had better offers, I decided to go with this one ad they were providing WFH (it was peak covid time). A few months into this startup, I realised the founder had no goal, no vision, was given random  vague projects, founders would pick up any project that their client would somehow talk about, assign it to me without doing any market research, and few months later scratch that. I realised, there was no future here, and for no reason, one of the founder kept micromanaging me (although the colleagues and seniors were great). And by that time, I also realised I was severely underpaid, as one of my close friend, who was a year junior to me was paid higher. I decided to leave that place, during a time of mass resignations in 2022 (the founders did try to retain me, but I was adamant as I didn’t see any vision and founder was too rigid to listen to anyone). I worked there for 1.3 years, at the same salary.

Later on in August 2022, I joined a series C funded startup, with a base pay of 14.5LPA, at nearly 2 YOE. While the hike was well above 120%, in some time I realised that this was the salary that they paid to IIT campus hires. Felt a little demotivated, Also, the culture here isn’t exactly good and sometimes gets quite toxic. However, I kept commited to my work, and come March 2023, I got a 10% appraisal, for which the VP personally had a conversation, I conveyed that I had higher expectations considering I joined at lower pay (1/n)

Hardwork and consistency pays off

The VP did agree to that, and my manager and VP had a few conversations around this topic from time to time. A week back, VP called me and congratulated me, saying that he decided to do a off cycle appraisal for me and gave me 26% appraisal, making my base pay 20LPA. I was on cloud 9. I didn’t arm twist my company, nor did I even ask for a higher pay, I was offered it right away. 
  
 Now many of you might say, dude whats the big deal. People with 2 YOE make 69LPA. Well, good for them. But I just wanted to write this post, To convey that don’t get disappointed when you see such CTC polls on grapevine. Everyone has their time. I’ve had many other failures, I keep trying to move to PM role(after working in startups, eventually gained interest), appeared for CAT(didn’t score that well), tried many things to come out of this tier 3 college status and make a career for myself. Just keep working hard, stay committed to your skills, good Karma, and success will surely follow you.

Hi! I just finished my second year at a tier-1 college. I’ve been looking for internships to do this summer, and a startup offered me a backend role of 10k pm stipend that required 8 hours a day commitment. I’d have to travel to their 2-3 times a week to their office that’s 7-8 kms away.

I know a decent amount of web dev, have built a MERN clone of Reddit, and I’m pretty good at algorithms. 

Upon asking one of my mentors about this, he that the guy who’s offering me this role is simply ripping me off. I just wanted a second opinion on this. 

Am I being underpaid?

I joined my company couple of months back. I’m 2023 passout and previously i had an intern experience at a startup, i gave interview of SAP Labs because i was not sure of my PPO. In the HR round of SAP Labs HR asked me about the salary I’m expecting at SAP, i told her “X” and after getting that number she told me she would get back to me after discussing it with manager, but after couple of days she offered me “T” which was way less than “X” . I knew she was tryna low ball me but as i did not had any other offer in my hand, I had to accept it. But with the salary that I’m getting (ik it is less than my peers) i just don’t feel like giving my full at my work it just demotivates me, should i talk to my manager about this? because while joining my manager thought i joined at “X” ctc but I never revealed this, also i do not have an idea what exactly should i convey to my manager. Please help me out

Recently, I gave an interview at this early startup in Bangalore. It consisted of 5 rounds.
- The first four rounds were technical, design, and assignment rounds which went well. I answered all the questions fairly well and the interviewer was happy knowing the answer.

- The fifth round was with the CEO - Now this was the turning point. He was more concerned about my personal situation. He asked questions like, where I live, where is my hometown, if WFO is okay for me (I was working remotely in my current company ), and where is your dad ( I said he was no more and that turned off the CEO of a company), how will you keep my mother in BLR, why your mom not living with your siblings?. And I was like "WTF man".the only technical question he asked -> "Have you ever hacked a system in your recent days?". 😂😂

After wasting more than 14 hours in the process I received a rejection mail without any feedback.

Message to recruiter - if you are more concerned about the personal situation of the candidate, please conduct a preliminary round for that.
