Similar to communism, âequality of outcomeâ is deterministically bound to fail
Not surprised

There should be 'equality of opportunity' instead.

If youâre gonna be laying off people, you cannot justify spending on these programs in parallel
Even if these programs may be right, they arenât core to the business
Through a friend, Iâve heard that the focus on these things has really crossed a line at big tech. Itâs too much of a thing, and lots of promos etc happen basis how much you drive DEI as a manager

I doubt how many people they hired under these categories. I strongly believe they would have overstated the number here. They are hardcore businessmen. They wouldn't be that foolish to hire people just be in the liberal good books.
It not only happens. It also has a negative impact. People who hired under these policies are taken lightly from day 1. I personally know someone who was told by everyone that she is DEI and hence, not given meaty work.

As Elon Musk said, DEI must DIE
Are DEI programs required? Absolutely yes!
Are these programs reaching the right audience? No
It's sad to see how many wannabe influencers take up all the opportunities to show off that they got all of them.
Hopefully, these tech companies also slashes women in tech campaign as well so that more hardworking & talented men can get back to workforce.
The women are also hardworking and talented but are harder to find. These programs are primarily aimed at taking an effort to find the talented ones. No company wants to hire folks who are not talented - male or female.
However, I have been seeing most of them(but not all) who get hired in these programs are pompous & sycophancy females who play alot of bad politics & groupism thing but never an individual contributor to projects.

In a lot of instances, a lot of non meritocratic promotions happen because of these things. Managers are asked to pick up candidates based on DEI in campus placements or lateral hirings to fulfill their quota or KRAs to make the variable. There needs to be a certain curb on it else it will be donkeys ruling the world.

Does this not always happen, especially when companies make promises and change rules based on an ongoing trend?
I recall, Meesho promoted the concepts "Work from Anywhere", and "Recharge Break" heavily during and immediately post-pandemic. The way they did it was quite too loud with branded (employee branding) videos, posts on LinkedIn and stuff!
And in less than 6 months, once other companies started their twice-a-week work from office (or thrice-a-week), Meesho joined the bandwagon.
The founder who commented about other companies' layoffs being a result of massive hiring, did the same a few months ago.
Hypocrisy is the new normal! đ
I believe these stories are made up just to fullfill the news criteria or some news counts to reach, picking a subset of laid off people of particular section doesn't signify that an organisation is cutting down expenses or lowering their motto, article doesn't provide any reasonable theoretical reasoning or factual data to prove its point. The bad part is that it creates fear among us even though there is nothing like that. Would love your opinion.

Is this a sign that google and other corporations are expecting a right wing govt to win the 2024 elections? đ .. I mean just speculating..
They saw the limelight. They saw hiring skilled and work oriented candidates is better than quota hiring. No more bias.
