Time-consuming prospect research, or is it just me?

Hi fellow client-facing (sales/marketing/BA) folks of Grapevine, I wanted to know how much time is spent in prospect research and some challenges associated with it.

How important is the data available from the digital footprints of a company/individual, from LinkedIn, Twitter, websites, podcasts, annual reports, blogs, etc? Also, what are the data points you need/seek for, to understand your buyer?
