There are horrible managers everywhere and Indians are hands down the worst managers ever to exist. There may be exceptions but if you're moving out of India, try your level best to not get an Indian manager.

I've had the fortune of having worked in 3 countries so far. India is by far the most exciting place to be in 2024.
But there's something about our work ethic that just concerns me. In both white and blue collar.

In most other countries, I've observed people strictly sticking to the 9 to 5, working diligently in those hours - not wasting too much time on chai sutta breaks, instagram browsing, gupshup etc.

They work for 8 hours, then leave. And think about work directly the next day.

In India, most of us spend more hours - but very obviously very few of those hours are productive. In fact, I lately feel that too many people around me are doing even 2-3 hours of work on a good day.

We end up just staying around, passing time, and then go back home. When we could have achieved so much more.

Work ethic has fallen. Work hours have gone up.

We need to be more mindful of our actions, we need to work well at work, and then do well at home.

I think it's a function of being over populated. There are 1.5-2 people doing what 1 person should be doing, hence this effect.

Needs to be fixed, it's the sign of a major problem in the workforce. Thoughts?

We don't end up staying long hours because we need to. But because we have to, so that the manager doesn't feel like we leave the office by "half day".  
  Also, they have a leverage that they can shut their laptops at 5 and nobody will reach out to them. But here in India, managers do reach out for escalations, or make us attend lat evening calls because it's afternoon in Europe or morning in NA. The people sitting in Europe or NA are not made to wake up early or attend night calls to accommodate us during our actual 9-5.  
  People also chit chat etc. bcz they know for sure that they have to sit for long hours..so they need to take small breaks in the day. No one has the capacity to work 10-11 hrs without any breaks.  
  Here it would never be possible to have such a strict 9-5.

Currently working for Foreign Startup, under a Indian Engineering Manager.

Manager is incompetent, doesn't like disagreemets. If you disagree with him, then he goes to length to make your life diffult. Already seen few examples in the team. 

There are red flag all over the place. I'm not sure how upper management is not able to catch him. He does the politics, favoritism, etc...

List goes on and on. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S Don't want to leave the company in this market.

How do you deal with extreme work pressure and a toxic working environment.
I'm just done with my current company the culture is so toxic that people are leaving left and right. Dev's are working even on weekends and are denied leave. If anybody raises their voice then disciplinary action mails are used as a threat.
Office politics and salaries getting hold. 
It came to a point I'm ready to resign without any offer in my hand and maybe Month's carrier break to work on myself and keep myself sane.

I want to know how you keep yourself sane and keep up with this shit show. 🙏

I recently joined a organisation 3 months back as an APM and I am not liking the culture of the company.
From growth perspective the company is good but some things that disturb the mental stability. The micromanagement of the company. Strict wfo 5 days 9 hours shift. No flexibility at all. Every month review with a ppt justifying your work. 
Work pressure is alot. 9hrs is getting 10 hours usually. I am not sure what should I do🥲

Just now I was reading a post that a person has to forcefully resign due to a toxic manager/work environment. Shouldn't there be a movie 🍿 about toxicity of office managers, as there was 3idiots for choosing career. Like how employees get treated in banks (that video which went viral, manager yelling at an employee), another example when an employee stood up against his manager (order swiggy par karo jake), there are so many examples. My team and I also face a hell level of micro-management daily but no one speaks up about it. I tried highlighting it to my manager and team but no benefit. In my company, even if you make an HR complaint they are helpless and reroute you to the manager only. I think it's the same for others as well. Any opinions?? 

P.S. Not saying every manager is bad. I have worked with some great ones as well.

Immediate response was to say that it’ll be tough to manage the project and that long a leave isn’t possible

I debated back and they were like fine.
But since then it’s just been very cold.

Now why everyone is talking about benefits of working from office?
I saw post from Sunil Shetty on linkedin.

My take is, when pandemic hit companies asked employees to WFH to keep wheel rolling.
Now we know WFH can give greater control over personal and professional life(at least for me) we don’t want to go back to office.

In my opinion corporate want us to work from office cause,

- they can control our time, 9hrs in ofc, you are getting paid for time not skills.
- they want to show who is the boss here.
- Learning is key reason for WFO, bullshit, we have a lot of learning portals and traffic time can be used to learn but it is never a intention.

Is it just me or design culture in India is just becoming worse?

Saw a lead designer come in for work. Sit down for 5 minutes and make crass jokes and then leave. What even man. I am super disappointed. All the best people I have worked with have either left or are about to leave. All the women in office become uncomfortable with these jokes and it is visible on their faces. 

They then take credit for our work and speak really well to the senior management about "HE" has done. 

I transitioned to design to learn and grow in my career but this is the least ambitious field I have seen in my career.

Somehow in india all the product startup’s have adopted the most toxic and worst translation of what it’s being like as a product manager and engineering management. Both these roles have become nothing but fear mongering, power grab, and most being extremely bias towards almost everything. 

So your success is very much dependent on how your manager is and the opportunity that they provide. So if you want to avoid toxicity sooner, it’s the right step rather than stick and fail in the long term. Once again, I am talking based off of my 10 yoe. You may have a different experience and I’d definitely wanna learn more.

Toxic Leadership in Engineering and Product

Engineering management is pure dumb in India for US product companies. Non contributing managers and directors who won't even pass design interviews. These are parasites who'll latch on new host, one of the reasons keeping India down and also talent leaving

For context: Weekends are off. So just fri WFH. This is a Series B startup. I am not even asking for a leave but WFH for just 1 day. I joined recently. The only thing I did wrong was possibly informing a little too late.

Want to get opinion if I am overthinking or this classifies as toxic culture in startups where you are expected to push limits above and beyond regularly and sometimes weekends.

Not a great culture, also you don’t have to give the actual reason, instead say due to some unavoidable work or family health reason you will need to wfh. Its a good way of seeing what kind of employer one is, when they also treat urgencies like that. Indians feel they need to give a detailed explanation as to why they deserve wfh or leave, whereas in international companies, you just have to inform the manager.
