As someone who works with startups (not in)and has a well paying job, I am often intrigued and keen to invest money (say a few lacs, and provide some mentorship) as a micro angel investor in early age pre series/ seed rounds,  to try my hand. Not talking about becoming a LP or joining a VC/PE. (I know the pros and cos, the glamour and the ugly pieces) . While there are some fintech startups where you can invest as low as 5000/- in a startup, I believe these aren’t for me. Any guidance on how I begin. (Apart from- go out there and network with startup founders and events) ?

Given that these platforms invest at a very early stage, investing in Enterprise Tech, and FinTech businesses at this stage is highly risky without the time-consuming and resource-intensive nature of thorough due diligence, it's crucial to understand whether these platforms are adequately screening potential investments to minimize the risk of fraud or failure.

Platform Self-Investment: A Conflict of Interest?
A couple of angel investment/ crowd-funding platform raising money for itself using its platform raises eyebrows. This inherent conflict of interest raises concerns about the platform's impartiality and its ability to objectively evaluate potential investments.

I have recently left Tekion and was considering executing my ESOPs. For executing my ESOPs I need to pay around $3.5 per esop to the company. Should I convert my esops to equity? Am looking for some advice from the folks who might have done this in the past.

 I have worked with a lot of my clients who own ESOPs. 
  
 Some points to consider in your case: 
 1. Tekion is not a listed company. Finding a buyer for the shares will be difficult. Considering this, Are you comfortable holding the shares till IPO? 
  
 2. Tax: You will need to pay tax at the time of exercising ESOPs. Again, are you comfortable with paying tax upfront?  
  
 3. If you wish to sell shares through brokers, check if company has right of first refusal. This way, you can a good deal and sell the shares to company (prior to IPO).

Where did you work and how much money did you make?

Asking as it looks like a lot of promise of ESOPs and wealth creation has failed employees in this bloodbath slow growth, layoffs, and job changes.

I have had ESOPS in 2 companies 
#1 - company got acquired ..I got 45 Lacs IN ESOP ...thats 1.5X of my last annualized salary  ( so additional salary for 18 months) 
#2 - Company became unicorn ... I quit and company bought my ESOPs . Got 2 Cr
That is 3X of my annualized salary

Company 1 - I had joined at very early stage ; Company 2 - I joined at mid-stage

I am in discussion with some very early stage startup and if things work out then will be part of the founding team. They have promised to give me same salary as the current company’s salary but give ESOP. Is ESOP worth it if you are founding team member?

The founder has sold his previous company so higher chance of success it looks to me.

Is there any case where person made huge money on ESOP?

Are ESOP worth it? Did it make anyone billionaire?

It's been close to a year since I am earning a salary and this is what I do:
1. Invest a little less than 30% straight into MFs. I have three ongoing SIPs- small cap, flexicap and a Large + Midcap fund. (Planning to increase the amount further into these and not start a new sip)

2. Max out 80C by putting the entire limit in PPF, this is on top of what is by default deposited into EPF.

3. A little (inconsistently) into direct stocks as and when I find or get to know about a decent trade opportunity.

4. An LIC ULIP plan that my father made me subscribe to 🙂 (hopefully will end in a couple more years)

Tips from experienced folks will be much appreciated.😄
