Uber feeling like a CTC trap and it is ruining my life
Have lately been exploring switching out from Uber to early stage startups. Exploring founding engineer roles / CTO roles with people I know well The worst of it has been just the fact that our salaries are hard to match (even with Cash + ESOP, no matter what you do) Like I know you need to be okay with less cash. But I now feel that it’s such a jump down, I wonder if it makes sense. And then this feeling forever makes me averse to trying out something big, risky, bold. It’s a catch-22 situation lol
Hey man, feeling the same... tried to reach few folks for founding engineer but they are just unable to match. What's your total experience though?
Let's create something of our own. What say?
Same with me in Amazon. I know that when I switch I’ll have to settle for less
Oh man. I want to relate to this situation better. Help with a referral please?
At least Uber treats employees well. Other places with such high TC are very unfriendly. I guess you haven’t been part of such company yet
The reason ESOPs and the vesting schedules were invented were for the same reason as to what you are experiencing, a golden cage indeed. Build for somebody else's dream or build your own dream and work for it :)
Vesting schedules are f'ed up and create bad incentives. I would leave in an instant.
@IdleLambkin Uber is better than 99% of the companies in India. Highly recommend taking a cto role or becoming a founder if you’re looking to go in startup route. Highly recommend not joining any startup (early, growth, unicorn) unless you get 2 level jumps and pay hike. People in uber don’t realize how good they have it
- ex Uber, joined startup in a cxo role
Also 65 lakh isn’t a show stopper salary. Vp/cto comps go til 2 cr cash (up til series B/c level). So it’s only L6+ folks who are golden handcuffed

Survive dude, you will be able to figure something out. Considering you are at Uber, you must be smart.

I just came out of meeting with my manger who wants me to act as tech lead but wants me to pay Sr.Developer salary which by the way I'm already underpaid. Can we exchange our problems please!!!!
So true. Being a L5a, at my yoe, it’s almost impossible for me to switch in India.
Faang/unicorns aren’t matching current TC and joining early age startups is a bit risky.

Sorry if this comment is unrelated but I wanted to clarify something
I am an SDE 2 at Amazon I wanted to switch to a company with better WLB like Google. Could someone pls let me know which companies can pay me similar but have really good wlb.
I know that doesn’t make much sense from company’s perspective but I don’t care lol

It's correct that you'll find less companies paying more than 70LPA. You'll have to find those companies - it's not like you won't find any.

Any reason for targetting founding level only? Why not small startups ?
