Firstly, don't have offline social skills.

Something wrong with us or culture is say that this is right or wrong? Can't we make our own decision?

Many talented people are wasting their energy on something which is not related to them.

I saw a friend tweet about how Bangalore is full of connected but lonely people jumping in to join every Meetup/WhatsApp group that becomes available. This is my problem with the meetup / conference culture. Meetup culture is all about optionality. You think you'll meet someone new who's cool. Someone who can help you build your network. 

You would rather join a meetup with 100 other strangers than build stronger connections with your friends. In life there are only a few people who really matter. 

People who you can call at 11 PM to rant about your workday. People who you know will be genuinely happy about your promotion. People you share screenshots from work with. It is not probably the 100 strangers in that Whatsapp group that you think of when you are having a health issue and want to share your fears. It also means lowering your ego, which I'm happy to do with my old friends. I'm always happy to ping them when I get the chance, and I'm the one asking them to call me. 

I'm the one who asks them to hang out with me. I used to think, "Why bother?" but then I realised that it doesn't matter who reaches out first. It is not about keeping a count. 

I realised it's for me! If I have a chat with a friend of mine who I have known for over 10 years, my mood improves immediately. Everyone is very busy. Everyone is stressed with their jobs and their personal lives. Some of them are married now. Some have children. But that's where you've got to work to keep connecting with the people who matter to you. Friendship is also about being vulnerable. True friendship is built on vulnerability. 

Being able to share your dreams, your failures and your demons with each other. While the meetup culture is all about bumping into people for 5 minutes to judge their worth and whether they are worth your time, my preference is for long 1-1s. Either on the phone or face to face. Dating has become the norm for relationships today, but many don't realize that it's a relatively recent development, prevalent in Western society for only about a century, and it's already causing societal issues.

Previously, Indian arranged marriages were standard (different from forced marriages). Families would arrange meetings between their daughters and another family's sons. If they liked each other, they would soon plan the wedding, marry, have sex, and start families.

Today, individuals are left to find their own partners. If you don't find someone in high school, university, or work, your chances of finding a partner diminish. There's also less incentive for marriage, as sex no longer requires marriage or even dating, leading to more people pursuing sex directly. This has created a skewed dynamic where fewer men pursue women due to competition, turning to porn instead, while women face exploitation by men who have abundant choices.

Ultimately, near 28-30 both genders rush to the arranged marriage system to get them a partner while having their feet dipped on dating apps.

In the US,
This has lead to decreased marriage rates and, consequently, lower birth rates since most births occur within marriages. A decline in families results in a decreased population, putting more pressure on younger generations to support an aging population. Western nations, therefore, rely heavily on immigration, causing additional challenges. Increased single motherhood also correlates with higher crime rates, drug use, loneliness, mental health issues, and suicides

P.S. I'm young and dating too. Just thoughts for a conversation on what the implications of dating for us as a society could be.

Lately, I have been thinking very deeply about my college days when the Flipkart story had inspired the entire lot of my batch at IIT-D. We were starry eyed college kids who wanted to do something innovative in India and break away from the "three" most popular moves after IIT:

1. UPSC
2. MBA
3. MS/PhD abroad

I proceeded to then work in various Indian startups and noticed an alarming thing. I began to realise a pattern across all my stints:

The initial founding team does exceptional work innovating, they excel at what Thiel calls "Zero to One", the act of creation. I will concede that although most founders fail to innovate by often copying what worked in the west but the initial founding team usually excels in execution. It allows for initial traction as it breathes a fresh breath in the\ space that they are operating in.

Almost always, when Product Market Fit is "achieved"(whatever that means), the founders begin to deploy insane amounts of funds into growth. 

By definition, Growth is not a bad thing. But, I have been noticing that across all startups I have worked at( all raised funds from the largest global funds) that it comes at the expense of product building. And during this era of hypergrowth, the product starts to stagnate while focus becomes marketing and sales. 

I often felt that this was temporary. That once we reach enough scale, we would start to innovate again. 
But time and time again, the ability to innovate atrophies over time.
Rather than building something that has enduring value by executing faster than anyone, the focus becomes achieving growth at all costs. 

This ultimately leads to two outcomes:
1. The startup cannot sustain this growth and retention begins to look dire. The churn becomes unbearable and the startup goes out of business.

2. The startup gets acquired by someone bigger, allowing founders and investors to believe that they created value where none existed in the first place.

I am completely dejected at this.

I have always dreamt of playing an electric guitar on stage. I started to learn guitar in late 2020 and it's been 1.5 years since I stopped playing it do to multiple reasons like bad time management, upskilling for switching, work etc.

I always wanted to work in companies not directed towards IT such as Mercedes Benz, Philips, Samsung,  Siemens, Ather etc and work in areas where UI/UX design overlaps with physical product design. Physical product design is my first love and will continue to be so as that field still fascinates me. Not everyone is privileged enough to pursue their passions and might have to work in certain areas where they are partially interested and pay is good coz, hey! We gotta pay bills.

I wanted to learn multiple languages and was learning German a couple of years ago. Again, due to the reasons listed above, I had to drop out. I want to travel abroad for work, work in multi cultural teams etc.

I always wanted to run marathons and reach the top of Nandi Hills (a hill on the outskirts of Bangalore) by cycling because I was once a obese kid and wanted to prove myself wrong. Now, I have to loose 13 kilos and I'm on working on it. But I sometimes wonder if I can do these things as I had so much to work on.

I was pretty good in sketching. In fact, I was pretty good once upon a time in my design school. Now, I barely sketch. I don't want to loose that part of me who use to sketch day and night. I want to have an Instagram page with all the digital illustrations I wanted to make.

We live in times where one has to consistently switch jobs, upskill everyday, spend time with family and friends (not that I don't want to, but I also love my personal time), take care of aging parents, take care of kids, take care of household, travel to work, get enough sleep for 6-7 hours a day- basically be an adult.

I sometimes wonder if life is nothing but a graveyard of dreams. I understand that one can't do everything in life and sacrifice is inevitable in life.

Folks who are 30 y/o and above, do you still have dreams or are following your dreams while responsibilities pile up in life?

I don't know about you guys, but Marine Drive on weekends has become a whole new battlefield. I was out there recently, and it felt like I was dodging reels, not people. Every few steps, there’s a group of chapris making Instagram reels, blocking the walkway. It's getting out of hand, can't even walk in peace anymore.

Sure, it's a public space, and everyone has the right to do their thing. But when it starts affecting others’ ability to enjoy a simple walk by the sea, that's when it gets frustrating. Maybe the police should start cracking down on these folks the same way they handle reckless driving incidents. It's turning into a circus out there!

I get it, the internet has opened up opportunities for a lot of people, but when it starts feeling like you're walking through a production set on your Sunday stroll, something's gotta give.

What do you guys think? Is this just part of the new normal, or should something be done about it?

Are indians gentically good at juggling multiple concepts at the same time?

Holi hai? Diwali hai? So what, nothing to enjoy. Lets spend the day laying on the bed, watching stuff over phone. Feeling less and less disconnected with friends, to the point where I feel I don't even have friends. College friends are based in another city. Didn't even try to make friends at workplace. Stuck alone in my homecity as past 6 years I was based somewhere else completing my grad and preparing for jee. Prior to that focused a lot on studies. So had little to no interaction with people during academics. And now when I have time and money to spend, there is noone with whom I can have fun with.

I love to read about tech and how startups evolved. Have spent a lot of time figuring out how the good product companies in the US got built: Google, FB, Instagram, Snap, Pinterest etc. etc. 

One thing stands out: A lot of these started out as just projects, and not a real startup. 
Instagram was just an idea to make photo filtering better. Reddit was just a project around making a cooler internet.

They set off as projects, and got some traction before becoming funded startups. Because they had devs in the founding team, who were always doing projects as side hustles. 

This wasn't the time when SDE salaries were so pumped up, they didn't want to just become good devs, they probably wanted to solve real problems. 

My takeaway: 

Maybe Engineers shouldn’t be too incentivised to just code. They should be incentivised to think business. 
Thats how FB, Google, Insta etc happened as companies.

In India, high pay endears engineers to stick to coding, do less business thinking.
That’s why we don’t see too many coders posting their side projects on X, Reddit, GV within India. Maybe there just aren’t enough. 

Have just been thinking about this. 

Open to thoughts from the community - maybe my view is limited. Would love to hear.

India would take light years to be a developed country.

Also this has been a major root cause of being attacked by so many invaders over the centuries.

Someone who has resources in abundance, would not take any interest to help others in need. Not just basic,but any other thing also.

Infact to say,we get easily influenced by anything. We don't have our own identity just like the French.

It's a very Indian mindset to treat or look down upon people who make a lot of money. We find some or the other reason to bring them down. We call them names. Though most of our life problems can be solved by money. 

Just like there is an American dream I think the Indian dream is to stay middle class and bitch about people who do the hard work. 

I understand that there are certain classes of people who are truly disadvantaged in terms of caste or patriarchy but for others it's just being lazy and reluctant to change.

Bitching about people who are successful just gives them a sense of achievement without actually putting in the effort.

The internet/apps gave people a platform. Everyone is seeking to be popular without putting in the effort. There's no need for 'Deep Work' anymore. Everyone wants to give Gyan and life-lessons on LinkedIn. 

I just lament the subversion of goals and ambition into a phoney-seemingly-all-knowing-charade on one of the social media platforms.
