A faded memory dawned on me early this morning while commuting to work, as I saw few kids leaving for school. 

A few years back, I was teaching underprivileged children in a distant government school as a part of a social initiative.

We asked kids, What do you want to become when you grow up?”

I really felt humbled and privileged when the kids responded with Policeman, Driver, Mechanic, Patwari(govt official who keeps record of lands) etc. 

We even remarked that whether they would prefer to be a pilot. And they responded with No. Perhaps, it was representative of things that they knew could achieve and things they could not.

It may even have been that their initial choices were likely due to positions of power that they had witnessed and wanted to emulate. Probably, they were not exposed to various options that exist out there.

As my cab whirred away, I was left with a deep sense of gratitude upon recollection of those memories. 

I really hope those kids achieve whatever they set their sights at.

I grew up in a small village in Bihar, where dreams were often simple and humble. There was only a small government school, but I never went. Instead, I worked in a vegetable shop and my uncle's store, dreaming of having my own shop one day. 
  
 Then I found work in a cyber cafe, and the internet opened up a new world to me. I discovered a university in Delhi NCR and earned a scholarship there. I graduated with honors and now work at a fintech as an APM. 
  
 I know I wasn't supposed to be here, but I am. People believed in me, and I made it. Next time you find yourself among those kids, tell them about the skies and how it feels to soar.  Who knows? Maybe one day they'll take to the skies, not just as pilots but as legends, their wings crafted by the belief that they can be more than what the world expects them to be.

I am originally from a small town and did my BSc in Computer Science. My relatives and neighbours used to say that I am a good for nothing freeloader who is a "nikamma" - unemployed. It was very hard to find a job back then and I used to have deep anxiety about it. My only dream was to get my fathers appreciation. He is my biggest hero. 

So I started preparing very hard and practiced my skills. The only one who supported me was my mother who used to give me tea even at 3 in the morning while I used to study. Even my own father gave up on me and from time to time he used to say that if you are living under my roof then you have to follow my rules. He also used to say that look at the neighbour's ladka who got a government job and he asked me to prepare for Bank PO.

So I moved out from my town and shifted to Gurgaon where I got a small PG with some money that my mother had given me. I also started freelancing on Fiverr and which led me to improve my communication skills. Finally, when I got my Google offer letter I felt like I made it. It was the best response to all the taunts by people around me. 

I suddenly became a superstar in my town with people congratulating my parents. I bought my mother gold bangles and dad a new watch with my first salary. I was looking at my offer letter today and it reminded me of all the hardwork I did to achieve this moment.

This is the story of my life. In case anyone needs help. I am ready to provide support to aspirants here as a way to give back.

I’ll go first, getting that old PSP, the one which had WiFi in built. Or maybe PlayStation 2 which was like 5k-6k back then.

Now, I could get a PS5 or buy games to play on my PC, but the feeling is lost. Just like my childhood.

I guess I lived a part of my childhood today. Went on a walk and had a Cornetto IceCream, which back then I didn’t have the money for and had to buy an Orange/Cola IceCream. Then, I walked around my society.

Saw a few kids playing football and instantly teleported back to when I was a kid.

Now that child is gone and the dream has too. 
But still, it feels good remembering that 5 year old me would be proud of adult me, and that’s what truly matters. 🥰

There’s a lot of time for you too do what you wish to do. Guilt and regret are temporary, your actions are kinda more important. 
  
 We will always disappoint our people as every person is different. You did what you felt gave you happiness at that point. Don’t be hard on yourself. 
  
 Your parents will eventually be the happiest when they see you chasing your dreams and goals. Don’t regret anything. Just take it one day at a time and do what feels right.

My father worked as a peon when I was a kid. I barely had any friends and could not afford any toys. He used to work really long hours everyday. He was sleeping when I went to school and I was sleeping when he got back from work. So we never really talked. I was not good at studies during school, later I got to know that I had severe ADHD. My teachers used to say that I am good for nothing and very talkative all my life which gave me a lot of anxiety.

I got into a CSE at a Tier 2 college. This was with the help of my cousin sister who used to tutor me after school and taught me how to think from fundamentals. 

In college my seniors used to do a lot of ragging and make us not have food in the hostel mess. I lost a lot of weight and ended up with jaundice. This was the reason why I had a very bad CGPA in first year, <6. Slowly over the years I was able to bring it over 7.

I got into a service based company after college with a CTC of 3.75 LPA. I did not have any offers and I did not have anyone for guidance in my life. That is when I started to pick up some freelancing gigs and talked to people from other countries and cultures which educated me about top tech companies. So I started preparing for that.

I was rejected a total of 4 times by Amazon which completely broke me from the inside. Meanwhile my father got stomach cancer and he passed away. To this day my deepest regret is that my father did not see me finally achieving success in my life and till his last moments I am sure he thought of me as a failure son.

As I moved through my career I made a goal of reaching Google. I prepared very hard for an entire year with a lot of studying and preparation. Finally I got into Google. My family became very happy for me as I was the first person in my entire extended family to get such a package. After a lifetime of struggle I was finally content with where I am.

My only wish is that my father was here and his struggle for providing me with the best was not wasted.

Glad to hear this man. My father also passed away because of stomach cancer. Cancer sucks but he's smiling down on you from heaven and your family is lucky to have a person like you with them!

For me it was always startups and now looking at the landscape I think it’s very hard. For 8 years, I just wasted my time.

Anything I am building is failing. Couldn’t raise any funds, non of my products reached mass market or gain enough profits. Have skills but non to utilise on!

Indian B2C is extremely hard, and even though people think Saas is great, bad news guys, Indian business rather use excel than pay for jira. There is a saying now - “Easier to earn a dollar than a rupee”.

Have meet so many founders and VCs. Most of them lost touch of reality. Either moved to US or on leave from their own startups.

Only think I know is going through a complete mental breakdown and no one to look up to. My gf left last year, can’t even get any jobs in this market neither can build something useful.
