A question regarding the need of an MBA in analytics

Hi all,

This question is for people who have been in this field (any form of analytics) for a few years.

My background (You can skip to the next section and jump back for reference here): Role: Data Scientist/Analyst Tech stack: Python (ML), SQL, Tableau YOE: 2 years Work: Started here as a fresher. Being in a service based company, we offer analytics solutions. I have worked to create a clients data pipeline(No code tool), to maintaining it, creating dashboards (Primary task) and ML models (Based on any major change in metrics). Salary: On the lower spectrum (Definitely!)

Reason for this post: I would call myself good with tools but lacks industry knowledge and the maturity to actually be in analytics. I do decent, but I have to depend on my manager sometimes to understand the business and provide correct solutions. But I guess that is how it is in case of any fresher starting out?

Question: Is pursuing a 2 year MBA (Targetting only Tier 1 colleges) a good idea for someone who is already working in analytics for 3 years (by the time I join an MBA program)? Please share your thoughts.

Context to the question: I've discussed with someone who did their MBA and works in analytics for a bank now. And according to them, the best way to progress in analytics is to choose a domain and stick to it. And to reset my career, I should do an MBA. This will help me get an understanding of all the domains, improve my soft skills (and time management, etc.) and also give me a good place to start fresh. And they say it will help me in the future as well, as it gives me a very good alumni network.

I'm considering this because of my ability to network has not been that great and also to get the domain knowledge they said I'll be getting. But is it really worth it considering I lose 2 years salary, and salary growth and also have to spend a big amount.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

Eh, so many questions here!

  1. Time management - You won’t learn this at MBA

  2. Domain knowledge - Why can’t you learn that in current situation?
Yes, MBA will facilitate exposure across domains (tier-1 atleast enable that), but you want to focus on a single domain.

A masters in analytics/business intelligence can also be considered in this situation.

Maybe structure your questions better, you might get better help here.

Ah! Apologies for the mess and thanks for replying @ElonMast

Basically I'd love to know from the people in analytics if they did an MBA or not, and how would them not doing it or doing it have changed their current situation. I hope this makes sense!

Also, I cannot learn domain knowledge in current situation as my company doesn't have a lot of clients, and switching seems the only solution. But to do so I need to look into other domains too. Is there any resource through which I can get proper understanding of each? Like a case study or something

Thanks again for responding!

Recent mba grad from one of the iims . An mba even from the best institutions in India will teach u nothing specially in terms of analytics domains. The profs most of them(in some cases even >90 percent have outdated knowledge.) a lot of these colleges still. Anything related to tech just skip mba. There is nothing that those colleges will teach u isn't available online and that too from the best instructors/profs in the world and that too for free. Get an mba if you wanna switch(believe me that's not so easy at all since u have 3 years workex you will mostly get into analytics consulting(tiger, fractal etc) pm roles, tech consulting(Accenture consulting etc), or operations roles U can switch to finance(core finance like treasury) Investment banking, risk(Analytics) roles etc but that would require uoskkiling in finance thru certifications like cfa along with ur mba. Other roles like marketing firms(hul etc) it will be difiifjcky to get into since the profile doesn't align and those jobs anyway pay less than tech, Consulting Ib etc.

And then there are just run of the mill sales roles in lower tier firms and around 20 percent of the grads land up in these roles from top institutions and as much as 50 percent from tier 2 and almost 80-85 percent from tier 3 mba institutes so then it doesn't even make sense for a guy like u to go into those roles. Can dm me if you wanna know more about thr mba space in India

Been in Analytics and Data Science for 7+ years and have also done an MBA degree. Doing an MBA or not totally depends on what your short term and long term objectives are, for example if you want to earn more then MBA wouldn’t be the right option but if you want to pivot into different domains then probably do an MBA. So it depends. Would be happy to help you out if you want more clarity :)

Best to go for the IIMC PGDBA if you're really targeting an MBA. That's the best analytics course out there. General MBA is not at all worth it imo of you're looking to stick to analytics domain

If you don't mind, could you please provide a few more details to this? I'd love to know if you did an MBA or not and what difference that made
