Amazon - put in a coaching plan. What to expect next ?

Hi folks,

My friend informed me that he has been put in a coaching plan at Amazon. He is really confused & demotivated and doesn't know what's next for him ?

It would be really helpful if anyone can provide insights about how to come out of it or if failed, what will be the next action that can be taken.

Thanks.

So I worked for Amazon and was on pip for almost 1 year . They kept on giving me new set of task and started closely monitor them. I kept of completing task. The next set of tasks are even harder and with tighter timelines. I cleared multiple iterations but they never moved me out of pip. Eventually mass layoff happened at Amazon and I got laid off. But that was a good thing for me. I got 6 months salary advance and got a new job in 15 days with decent hike.

So in a nut shell. They will probably not throw you out of company. But they try to make your life difficult until you realise and start looking out of other opportunities. They would want you to put down papers.

Amazon is notorious for managing out poor performers. If their manager is good at heart and actually believes your friend can improve then by all means ask them to give it their all and fight it all

In practice though very few make it out of PiP. It's better if they start interviewing elsewhere.

I suggested him the same, start interview prep and get an offer ASAP.

Any idea what is the actual duration they keep an employee under coaching plan, before showing the way out ?

If your friend has been enrolled in a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) at Amazon, it is really important to know about the process and what are you expecting from it. Typically, the PIP lasts from 30 to 60 days and serves as a performance improvement tool based on employee-specific goals established by management.

During this time, your friend should work on meeting those objectives and get regular feedback. Record any progress made, and throughout the process, communicate with management. If this has a material impact on performance, they may succeed in getting out of the plans; if not, termination would likely follow.

Cheer your friend to keep them motivated and active. For example, they may want to ask for help from their colleagues or mentors and look into different ways to develop strengths.
