Beyond slack

Today morning my ceo added me to company's insta group chat, wtf why?? That would be the last thing I wanted. We are a ~90 employees company and most of them follow me on insta now 😭., Should I follow them back? Something i never wanted coz insta algo recommend my liked post/reels to my followers and this kills the freedom of me liking anything without thinking what if my manager see this meme which is on him 🤣.

Indian Edtech is a dumpster fire

Was interviewing at one of the acquisitions of a major edtech player for a design role in Bangalore roughly 2 years ago. 🚩 Didn't share agreement on email unless I came to office for a day's worth of work (after completing interview assignment). 🚩 Exit clause in agreement mentioned company can terminate contract any time with a few days notice, no provision for me ending contract (never in my life did I see such a one-sided contract). 🚩 Was asked to reuse free resources available online to repurpose content for them (why fucking raise funds if that's all you want to do). 🚩 Overheard - "Who cares about quality, just bring in teachers who are influencers that can bring more students behind them". Boiled my blood. 🚩 Was tweeting all of this in a discussion about edtech on some thread without naming the company. Got asked to chat with founder's office guy while I was leaving at the end of day. They either stalked my socials or somehow came across my tweets and wanted me to bring my concerns to seniors instead of sharing them publicly. Excuses that were given - "We are a growing company, not everyone here is on our payroll, there's a mismatch in our teams internally, will take time to fix" etc etc. "You seem very passionate about education, you know how bad it is in India and we're trying our best to make a dent". Balls making a dent. I was even more furious by the time he was done talking. Politely asked me to delete the tweets (which I later did because I believe in second chances and not burning bridges). Did not sign agreement or return to work. Came to know later of more toxic stories coming out of edtech companies. Avoid edtech in India like the plague if you're still considering applying anywhere, this shit is not worth any amount of money. They are literally destroying our future and care more about their investors and VCs rather than their students or even the larger startup ecosystem. I hope these shitshows shut down soon.

Folks that ping “hi” and disappear

I can’t be be the only one, but I am surrounded by multiple people that just do not believe in async communication. They first send a “hi”, wait for me to acknowledge and then only proceed to tell me what they want. Even if it is something ridiculous like “What is the URL to access this portal?”. I generally am very quick with messages and from the last few months, this “hi” business is ticking me off. I decided to do some social experiment and delayed my responses to hi. If someone just sends me a “hi”, I schedule a “hi” to 3 hours from then. Result? People would rather sit on blockers than tell me what they want. I then tried a decreasing backoff. If you texted me a “hi” once, I’d respond in 3 hours. Repeat it a second time, I’d respond in 4 hours. 5 hours the third time, 6 hours the fourth and so on. Results? People would still rather I acknowledge their “hi” than tell me what they want. Some anecdotes of how “efficient” communication is: 1. A guy wanted access to a portal that I managed. He pinged me a “hi” every morning for 7 straight days before actually asking me what he wants. 2. Another person wanted to understand git commands that can be used to solve merge conflicts. But not before pinging “hi” for 4 days, then just pulling me into a call with their manager and their manager pinging me a “hi” when I declined the call. 3. Another person wanted an update on a ticket I closed 2 years ago. All he wanted was a change request number, which he could find using control + F on the Jira portal. He chose to send “hi”s to multiple team mates of mine when I didn’t respond. Ultimately, I started telling people to not just ping and disappear and that they can reach out to me. But I guess old habits die hard and I still receive multiple “hi”s. Merko unkin”hi” lag gayi. Also, before you scream at me for ranting about such a piddi problem. https://nohello.net/en/ is the thing.
