Folks that ping “hi” and disappear

I can’t be be the only one, but I am surrounded by multiple people that just do not believe in async communication. They first send a “hi”, wait for me to acknowledge and then only proceed to tell me what they want. Even if it is something ridiculous like “What is the URL to access this portal?”. I generally am very quick with messages and from the last few months, this “hi” business is ticking me off. I decided to do some social experiment and delayed my responses to hi. If someone just sends me a “hi”, I schedule a “hi” to 3 hours from then. Result? People would rather sit on blockers than tell me what they want. I then tried a decreasing backoff. If you texted me a “hi” once, I’d respond in 3 hours. Repeat it a second time, I’d respond in 4 hours. 5 hours the third time, 6 hours the fourth and so on. Results? People would still rather I acknowledge their “hi” than tell me what they want. Some anecdotes of how “efficient” communication is: 1. A guy wanted access to a portal that I managed. He pinged me a “hi” every morning for 7 straight days before actually asking me what he wants. 2. Another person wanted to understand git commands that can be used to solve merge conflicts. But not before pinging “hi” for 4 days, then just pulling me into a call with their manager and their manager pinging me a “hi” when I declined the call. 3. Another person wanted an update on a ticket I closed 2 years ago. All he wanted was a change request number, which he could find using control + F on the Jira portal. He chose to send “hi”s to multiple team mates of mine when I didn’t respond. Ultimately, I started telling people to not just ping and disappear and that they can reach out to me. But I guess old habits die hard and I still receive multiple “hi”s. Merko unkin”hi” lag gayi. Same by me. Lots of ppl just ping and keep doing it. You say "hi" back. They will just respond like "hey I got a doubt" and wait for you to come back and tell them "yes tell me". This is shitty stupid

Not a Piddi problem at all! There's a lot variation too hi/ good morning/ how are you/ got a minute/ are you free / can we hop on quick call/ can I call you etc All of which depends on the actual question It irks me so much that I make sure to send Hi + para of what I want. That way I get my answers faster, without having to call people

I agree with no hello / hi. But calling is a different thing, sometimes its quicker to ask on a call.

OH GOOD GOD SOMEONE WROTE DOWN WHAT I'VE BEEN RANTING ABOUT EVER SINCE I STARTED WORKING! Like what is this Hi, how are you nonsense??? The organization I worked previously had an internal rule / guidance on professional communication. The first one was to never leave a message with Hi / Hello. Always state what you need after it i.e. "Hi, could you check ABC and let me know?" Not gonna lie, they weren't the best place to work, but thank god this is one of the few things I appreciated. No BS and to the point. I have been personally following that ever since.

Quite an entertaining read, especially the specific examples. In #1 and #2, did you guys just exchange Hi's for 4-7 days? Post screenshot, I don't believe you. Also, just don't respond. A 'hi' hello doesn't warrant one. Change status to nohello website.

This is the most relatable thing I have across on Grapevine, even more than salaries 😂😂. Ffs just convey what you want so I can take a call to even engage with you or not Or come up with a structured response. I don't want to be put on the spot to revert to a query once i reply hi.

I put nohello as my Slack status and suddenly, I'm considered rude by some folks. The other Slack pet peeve I have is people using my Slack ID in a DM which will notify me anyway. Slack, the company should thank Indians for adding to the number of messages sent on the platform with these fillers that provide no value.

😮‍💨How to deal with a colleague who doesn't acknowledge your help?

So one of my junior teammate always asks for help for few things. Actually he and some other folks don't have access to few portals and tools on Azure and Databases due to security policy. While all the other folks who need access to same tools, do consiser the fact that I might be busy with my own work and ask for time when to connect. But this coworker starts a huddle out of nowhere, expects me to login at 11:00 PM at night, just messqges hello/hi without any context and doesn't stop messaging until I reply. He also talks in a manner like he's doing me a favor. I know that me having access to tools means I should always unblock others, given it's not there fault they don't have access to it. My manager even tried to get them access but the security team to paranoid. How to deal with this. Am I being rude here?

Need Help decoding this Situation - Guy suddenly went silent

Disclaimer: This is not a dating post Started casually speaking to this guy from Grapevine. I got the confidence that he is genuine, so we chatted (no long chats or daily talk) over Instagram for 4-5 months. He had to fly to Bangalore for some work, so we planned to meet. He was all excited and decided the place too. We met for lunch; nothing shady or that would make me uncomfortable, he had some work so left after that. Am I overthinking? He could be simply too busy to talk to someone he met once
