Breaking Barrier : The journey of a CSE grad to UX Designer

Haiyaa!

As a final-year Computer Science Engineering (CSE) graduate with a deep-seated passion for UX design, I find myself at a crossroads. Despite my academic background, I've always been towards drawn the creative and problem-solving aspects of UX design. This led me to self-learn and gain practical experience in the field, amounting to a solid 1.03 years of hands-on UX design work.

However, the journey to secure a full-time UX design role has been challenging. The reality is that most Indian colleges do not offer design placements, making it difficult for aspiring designers like myself to find opportunities within the campus. The off-campus job market, on the other hand, is highly competitive, making it tough to secure a UX job with a satisfactory CTC.

I've tried reaching out to HR professionals from top startups like Cred, Nearbuy, and others via LinkedIn and email, but the response has been lukewarm. Even when my portfolio and resume were well-received, as was the case with a representative from Accenture, the lack of openings for interns and the unavailability of full-time positions or Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) have been roadblocks.

Despite these challenges, I remain undeterred. I believe in the power of persistence and the value of the skills I've acquired. I'm confident that the right opportunity is just around the corner, and I'm eager to contribute my UX design skills to a team that values creativity and innovation.

If you know of any opportunities or have any advice for navigating this journey, I'd be grateful to hear from you all.

Just make UX designs for the top 10 brands that you love, post them on LinkedIn - tag the brands and their entire design teams. CTC may not be what you want in the start - but at this point it's about getting a foot in the door at a place that'll really let you shine. So focus on that. Pehli jagah pe itna macha ki next switch apni marzi ke CTC pe marega.

6-8L is so low I used to earn 35 to 40k as an intern.assuming 8L that will be around 66.65k ig for a month additionally if I stay outside from my home town the 25-35k even 40k will be debited for a month remaining 20k it takes a lot of time to compound it and to reach 1l per month it takes a year or more even I feel like thr compounding process is so low

To be honest I'm looking for 11+ ctc currently, but yeah genuinely thanks for your response and help

I have the same story as you. I graduated in 2022 and was lucky to find a design leader that was willing to bet on me.

One small tip, instead of texting HRs try texting lead designers or design managers. Most of the leaders understand the situation better and if you’re lucky, they can make something work for you. Although as others have mentioned, you’ll need to reconsider your salary expectations. 10+ is achievable but can’t say in this recession szn.
