Zomato, the Indian food delivery company, is facing significant upheaval with several high-profile exits at both leadership and middle-management levels. Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal is accused of creating a chaotic, punishing work culture and has been behind moves to restructure the business after its successful IPO. Many key people have left or are looking to leave, with some of those let go reportedly not given proper goodbyes. Goyal is attempting to shake things up, but some insiders believe the food delivery arm was already a well-run business and unlikely to grow faster. However, Goyal is optimistic that the business could end up looking very different, with a newer set of people.
Over the past five months, the company’s middle management has seen an exodus, with a mix of firings and resignations. At least 15 exits have been confirmed, including people who have worked at Zomato for years. It also includes people who were promoted and given handsome salary hikes months before they were shown the door. The team that led Zomato to a successful public listing and beyond - leadership as well as middle management - is largely out of the company now.
