Civil Services vs Private job

I have just graduated and started working in Bangalore at a core company(electronics related) with 20L in hand and another 20L in bonus, stocks etc. But my parents are asking me to write Civil Services, which I like as equal as a private job, but after I gave one upsc attempt this year, then I understood that UPSC requires lot of luck too, as the most of the questions are dynamic and no one can predict them. This is also said by many UPSC toppers too. Instead I am thinking to continue in private job and get salary hike or promotion every year by working hard or by switching to other companies which has good opportunities. Can anyone give insights on whether I should pursue Civil Services or should I work in private firms. Please also give reasons. Thank you in advance

A decade ago, a well educated English medium kid had a disproportionate advantage in preparing for this exam by means of early access to books, coaching and top teachers.

First - UPSC is an exam with infinite syllabus, random questions and non transparent evaluation.

Second - the entire preparation is democratised thanks to affordable internet and digitisation of content and teaching. A larger pool of students/ aspirants have access to all content equitably. Which means the competition is very high.

Third - out of the 1000 vacancies that are hired for every month, 50-60 posts of IAS, IPS and IFS are the only meaningful careers when compared to private sector. Which means you are competition in very narrow niche.

You should do it keeping all these factors in mind.

But don’t it because of Laal batti or the power!

No point in struggling for a government job here. Excel at your core role, switch couple jobs, do an MS and settle abroad.

The Private sector will reward you much much more for your skills and effort over the long run.
